Job summary

Smiths Detection in Hemel Hempstead is seeking a Sustaining Product Support Engineer to join our Technology team. You will support existing products across their lifecycle and drive continuous improvement.

You'll work with a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team to ensure accurate product data, implement changes, and contribute to obsolescence reductions, quality improvements, and value engineering initiatives. This is an early-career role with growth potential.

Qualifications

  • Degree or HNC in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Up to 2 years engineering experience.
  • Experience using SolidWorks (3D CAD) and product data management systems.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work across teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general IT tools.
  • Eligibility for UK Security Check (SC) clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Drive changes and continuous improvements through formal change processes.
  • Create and update engineering drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
  • Support product lifecycle activities, maintaining integrity of product data.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Service, and Programme teams to implement improvements.
  • Advise stakeholders on change implementation, timelines, and impacts.
  • Support operations with rollout of product updates and enhancements.
  • Contribute to ongoing process improvement initiatives.

Job description

We are looking for a Sustaining Product Support Engineer to join our Technology team in Hemel Hempstead. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to play a key role in supporting existing products throughout their lifecycle while driving continuous improvement.

Working as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, you will help ensure that engineering processes run efficiently and that product data remains accurate and robust. You will contribute to solving real-world challenges such as product obsolescence, quality improvements, and value engineering initiatives.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Driving engineering changes and continuous improvements through formal change processes
  • Creating and updating engineering drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation
  • Supporting product lifecycle activities, maintaining integrity of product data
  • Working closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Service, and Programme teams to implement improvements
  • Advising stakeholders on change implementation, timelines, and potential impacts
  • Supporting operations with the rollout of product updates and enhancements
  • Contributing to ongoing process improvement initiatives
