The Sustainability Manager role

To manage the delivery of the Sir Robert McAlpine sustainability strategy, client requirements, and environmental compliance on a large project in South Wales.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Sustainability and construction project teams. They should have experience in construction environmental management and delivering projects aligned with key sustainability areas: Carbon, Resource Efficiency, Ethical Procurement, and Social Value.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring EMS implementation from pre-construction stage with support from the Head of Sustainability
  • Ensuring procurement documentation reflects sustainability requirements
  • Ensuring project and supply chain compliance with environmental legislation and best practices in water management, ecology, and nuisance through site inspections and audits
  • Managing project efforts to reduce carbon emissions and waste, and ensuring ethical procurement of goods and services
  • Understanding and delivering the client's sustainability requirements, including environmental assessments like BREEAM and Section 106 agreements
  • Reporting project performance against Build Sure and client standards
  • Reviewing performance, identifying improvements, and implementing corrective actions
  • Communicating strategy aims and achievements to staff and stakeholders
  • Sharing best practices across the business
  • Providing environmental management and sustainability training to staff and supply chain

Your Profile

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Membership of relevant professional bodies (IEMA / CIOB)
  • Experience supporting complex Construction or Civil Engineering projects with technical sustainability/environmental expertise
  • Strong communication and influencing skills
  • Proactive learning and development approach
  • Ability to manage sustainability across multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience in construction sustainability/environmental roles
  • Knowledge of environmental assessment methods (BREEAM, LEED, HQM, etc.)
  • Ability to review, advise, and manage sustainability performance and assessments (e.g., BREEAM, WELL, HQM, LEED)
  • Experience delivering company and client sustainability requirements from preconstruction to completion
