Job summary

Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join the Surgery Administration team in Avon Hospital. The role supports surgeons and RNs in the operating room, ensuring a sterile environment and accurate instrument handling throughout procedures.

You will prepare sterile tables, pass instruments, assist with draping and gowning, and participate in intraoperative timeouts to contribute to safe patient outcomes. On-call coverage is required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES.
  • Completion of military surgical technology program meets education requirements.
  • Certification: CST through NBSTSA or TS-C certification through NCCT; BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under RN supervision.
  • Set up sterile tables and ensure supplies, drugs and equipment are available.
  • Assist in counting sponges, instruments, and ensure aseptic conditions throughout the procedure.

Surgical Technologists play a vital role in the operating room by supporting surgeons and Registered Nurses throughout surgical procedures while helping maintain a safe and sterile environment for patients. In this role, you will assist with a variety of responsibilities, including preparing supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing surgical counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments during procedures, preparing sterile dressings and supporting the cleaning and sterilization of surgical instruments.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in a fast‑paced operative setting while continuously building your clinical and technical skills. As an essential member of the surgical team, your attention to detail, teamwork and commitment to patient care contribute directly to successful surgical outcomes every day.

This caregiver role is a day shift position with required on‑call coverage.

During the 3‑month orientation period, the schedule is Monday‑Friday, from 7:00am - 3:30pm

The required on‑call rotation includes:

  • Two call shifts per month (weeknight or weekend)

  • One to two holidays per year

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform scrub functions andassistin circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Set up the sterile table and ensureappropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.

  • Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. atappropriate timesduring surgery.

  • Assistin gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.

  • Ensure aseptic condition ismaintainedby the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.

  • Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”

  • Collect,identifyand label specimens removed during surgical procedures andgivesspecimens tocirculatorfor disposition.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)

  • OR Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program

  • Certification of: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Certified Tech inSurgery (TS‑C) through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)or American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.

  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours.

  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
