Job summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Surgical Phlebotomist to join our phlebotomy team in Surgery. You will collect blood samples safely, label correctly, and prepare specimens for the laboratory.

We are a small, friendly team working a 24-ward roster. The role includes in-house training, flexible shift patterns (early, late, long day, night) and opportunities for professional development.

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria include willingness to learn and ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to cope with work pressures in high care areas when collecting samples.
  • Desirable criteria include hospital experience and willingness to undertake NVQ training.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood samples safely with due respect to patient dignity.

Job Title: Surgical Phlebotomist

Contract Type: Permanent

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team in Phlebotomy in Surgery. This a small and friendly team, who covers a 24 roster across the surgical wards. We are looking for a compassionate and professional individual, who may have experience of healthcare work. All of the necessary training for the role will be provided.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting blood samples safely with due respect to the dignity of patients, and the needs of other clinical services, and to ensure blood samples are collected in appropriate containers, labelled correctly, and prepared and dispatched to relevant laboratory sections in a timely and accurate manner.

Assist in the provision of individualised care, under the supervision of a qualified nurse and others in the health care professional team.

Shift times for this role are Early shift (07:30-15:30) Late shift (14:30-20:00) Long day shift (07:30-20:00) Night shift (07:30-20:00).

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

  • Willingness to learn new skills. Ability to work as part of a team but also having the ability to work on their own
  • Ability to cope with work pressures when working in high care areas when having difficulty in collecting blood sample from patients
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary environment
  • Ability to complete all training packages including Venesection and cannulation course and ANTT course within 2 months.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in providing healthcare
  • Experience preferred but not essential, as full in house training given
  • NVQ3, or willing to undertake NVQ training
  • Basic Life Support training
  • Previous clinical experience in a hospital setting
  • Experience in Venesection in an acute setting
  • Experience in hospital IT systems
