Job summary

One Health Group in Scunthorpe is recruiting a Surgical First Assistant for its Elective Surgery Hub. You will support consultants in orthopaedic and spinal procedures and help prepare theatres, implants and patient setup for surgery.

The role requires hands-on intra-operative skills, strong teamwork, and a commitment to high-quality patient care in a modern facility. You will be part of a MDT delivering elective surgery services to the NHS framework.

Qualifications

• Experience as Surgical First Assistant in orthopaedics/spine.
• Registration with a professional body is required.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Commitment to patient safety and surgical governance.

Responsibilities

• Act as a Surgical First Assistant during elective orthopaedic and spinal procedures.
• Assist surgeons with hip/knee replacements, spinal surgery, and other elective procedures.
• Prepare theatres, instruments, equipment and implants for surgery.
• Support patient positioning, skin preparation and draping.
• Provide intra-operative assistance (retraction, suction, haemostasis, wound closure where competent).
• Maintain patient safety and complete the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
• Ensure accurate implant traceability and clinical documentation.
• Work with the wider multidisciplinary team.
• Report safety concerns and equipment issues promptly.
• Participate in audits, governance and continuous quality improvement.
• Maintain professional registration and SFA competency.
