Support Worker - Suffolk Independent Living

Suffolk Independent Living has been established since 2007 and is part of the Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People (trading as Equal Lives).

We are a small, friendly, office-based team with extensive experience in advising individuals who choose to make their own care and support arrangements, often with a Direct Payment from Suffolk County Council.

We are seeking a kind, committed, and caring Support Worker in Kesgrave to support a 9-year-old autistic child in his own home, supported by his parents. This role offers a rewarding opportunity for those passionate about working with children and supporting the wellbeing of children with autism.

The Support Worker will be an integral part of a loving household committed to the child's development. You will play a vital role within family life, becoming a valued member of the family team.

Your primary responsibilities will include supporting the child during playtime, engaging with toys, activities, and reading his favourite books. You may also assist with mealtime and snack routines.

Due to the parents' working patterns, the Support Worker will be supported by the parents but must be capable of working independently with the child when required. Essential qualities include:

  • Responsibility and the ability to act independently, remaining proactive and solution-focused
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A commitment to the child's wellbeing
  • Competence and capability in carrying out tasks effectively

Experience working with vulnerable children in a similar role is advantageous.

Qualifications required
  • NVQ in Health & Social Care or a Diploma in Children’s Workforce (support for applications will be provided but not essential)
  • Driving license
Additional information
  • The hourly rate is £13.50 per hour.
  • This position is for 10 hours per week, with additional hours likely available.
  • Employees will receive 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave pro-rata per year.
  • Statutory entitlements, including workplace pension, will be provided where applicable.

Conditions of employment include:

  • A satisfactory enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check, with costs covered by the employer.
  • Satisfactory references from two referees, including your current or last employer.
  • Completion of a 1-month probationary period.
