Job Role

We're currently offering an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated Learning Disability Training Team as a Support Worker.

Our team provides tailored training to participants with learning disabilities, supporting their journey into employment. We pride ourselves on fostering a friendly, inclusive, and fully accessible environment where every individual feels valued and empowered.

In this role, you'll support participants in exploring the world of work, identifying personal barriers, and developing strategies to overcome them. Working in a person-centred way, you will help individuals recognise their skills, aspirations, and support needs.

You'll lead group-based activities focused on developing practical work skills in areas such as recycling, shredding, factory operations, basic woodwork and crafts, deliveries, teamwork, and general workplace behaviours.

You'll be responsible for delivering engaging work skills training sessions and promoting safe working practices. You'll ensure the smooth operation of training areas by organising weekly schedules, maintaining equipment, and conducting regular Health & Safety checks. Additionally, you'll be responsible for completing risk assessments and identifying opportunities for further training and development to support participants' progress.

We're looking for someone who can work effectively both independently and as part of a team. A positive attitude, strong communication skills, and a genuine commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities are essential. A full driving licence and the ability to drive our crew cab van is also required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with customers to identify their skills, strengths, support needs and employment preferences. Deliver hands on work skills training in recycling and basic woodwork and work with individuals to help develop general skills for work and developing skills for independence.
  • Identify support needs of customers and identify their key skills. Plan with customers their next development steps, based on an assessment of need. Provide practical support to help them achieve their targets. Job match the customers with tasks that need undertaking.
  • Organise the team to do recycling, basic woodwork and maintenance activities to a good standard. Maximise the training benefit to people with learning disabilities of all activities.
  • Ensure that the working environment is positive and pleasant for customers. Work in a person-centered way. Motivate, communicate and listen to customers. Problem-solve issues and communicate issues to the Line Manager. Liaise with customers and parents or carers to provide effective support for them whilst training at Pluss and meeting their needs.
  • Be confident to learn to use a range of industrial equipment in a safe manner e.g. shredders, balers, woodwork power tools and saws and a range of hand tools. Deliver training to people with learning disabilities to learn how to use simple equipment safely and to undertake routine work tasks. Drive the works van to transport customers and products.
  • Be flexible in working in busy industrial sites undertaking varied duties with a team of people with learning disabilities. Be good at managing time well and prioritising. Have stamina to sustain a working day.
  • Be responsible for Health & Safety of the team regarding activities and individual's risks. Ensure that the working environment and equipment is safe for our customers. Minimise risks to customers. Teach safe working practices to customers, including safe lifting and spotting dangers. Inform line managers of issues, including concerns re. safeguarding. Assist Line Managers with risk assessing new activities, sites and equipment.
  • Maintain the equipment and van and report any faults or damage to Line Managers.
Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with people with disabilities or disadvantages, in particular those with a learning disability.
  • Proven track record re good communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience of identifying training needs and delivering training and support.
  • Woodwork, craft and other practical skills
  • Good organisational skills. Able to work on own initiative.
  • Basic IT skills e.g. Word and Outlook.
  • A full driving license and a willingness to drive a crew cab van.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a busy training environment.
  • A qualification in Care, Woodwork or equivalent experience.
  • Have a flexible approach and be willing to deliver training in other work areas at Pluss
