Job summary

Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a compassionate, motivated and organised Support Time and Recovery Worker to join the Mental Health and Wellness Team South in Waltham Forest.

The Mental Health and Wellness Team is a community based multidisciplinary service supporting adults with a range of mental health needs. The team works collaboratively with service users, carers, health professionals, social care colleagues and community organisations to promote recovery, independence and social inclusion.

The successful candidate will work mainly across Leytonstone and Leyton, providing practical and recovery focused support to service users in their homes and within community settings.

Main duties and responsibilities

As a Support Time and Recovery Worker, you will:

• Work alongside nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

• Develop positive and professional relationships with service users, supporting them to identify and work towards their recovery goals.

• Contribute to the team’s Access and Triage process, including gathering relevant information, contacting service users, supporting initial appointments and helping people to access the most appropriate service.

• Support service users to understand and complete benefit forms and benefit applications, including helping them gather supporting information and access specialist welfare rights advice when required.

• Provide practical support with matters such as housing, finances, correspondence, appointments, daily living activities and accessing local services.

• Accompany service users to appointments when this forms part of their agreed care plan.

• Support service users to access education, training, volunteering, employment and meaningful community activities.

• Encourage service users to develop confidence, independence and practical skills.

• Help service users build supportive social networks and reduce isolation.

• Promote physical health and wellbeing, including supporting attendance at health checks and encouraging healthy routines.

• Support medication related arrangements within the boundaries of the role and in accordance with organisational policies.

• Recognise changes in a service user’s mental health, wellbeing or level of risk and report concerns promptly to the appropriate clinician.

• Contribute to care planning, reviews, multidisciplinary discussions and risk management processes.

• Maintain clear, accurate and timely electronic records of all contacts and interventions.

• Work collaboratively with carers and family members, where appropriate and with the service user’s consent.

• Develop effective links with voluntary organisations, community groups, housing services, employment services, welfare advice services and other local resources.

• Promote dignity, choice, equality, diversity and respect in every aspect of the role.

• Work flexibly according to the needs of service users and the wider team.

About you

We are looking for someone who:

• Has experience of supporting people with mental health needs, social care needs or other complex circumstances.

• Understands the principles of recovery focused and person centred support.

• Is able to communicate with compassion, patience and respect.

• Can engage people who may find it difficult to trust services or remain involved with their care.

• Has good written, verbal and organisational skills.

• Is confident using electronic record systems, email and standard computer applications.

• Can work independently in community settings while remaining connected to the wider multidisciplinary team.

• Is able to prioritise tasks and respond appropriately to changing needs.

• Understands the importance of confidentiality, professional boundaries, safeguarding and risk management.

• Has an interest in supporting people with benefit applications, housing concerns and access to community resources.

• Values partnership working and can build positive relationships with professionals and community organisations.

• Is committed to inclusive practice and addressing inequalities experienced by people with mental health needs.

Knowledge of Waltham Forest and its community resources would be an advantage, although support and guidance will be provided.

Additional information

This role involves regular community visits and travel across Waltham Forest, particularly Leytonstone and Leyton. Applicants should be able to travel between different community locations in a timely and reliable way.

The post holder may work with people experiencing significant mental health difficulties, social isolation, financial hardship, housing problems and other complex circumstances. The successful candidate will therefore need to demonstrate resilience, compassion, sound judgement and a commitment to collaborative working.
