Roles & Responsibilities

The Teaching Assistant will focus heavily on welfare and holistic support:

  • SEMH Support: Work 1:1 or with small groups of pupils identified with SEMH needs, implementing strategies from their provision maps.

  • Nurture Groups: Facilitate and lead established nurture or emotional literacy groups (e.g., ELSA‑style activities) to promote positive mental health.

  • Liaison: Act as a key communication link between the class teacher, SENCo, and external agencies involved in a pupil's pastoral care.

  • Supervision: Provide dedicated supervision during less structured times (lunch/break) to pre‑empt and de‑escalate potential conflicts.

  • Recording: Maintain detailed, sensitive, and accurate records of significant pastoral incidents or breakthroughs for review by the SENCo.

  • Integration: Support the successful integration of pupils returning to mainstream classes following periods of emotional difficulty or absence.

Requirements

The school requires an applicant who demonstrates:

  • Qualification: NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning is highly desirable.

  • Experience: Significant proven experience specifically supporting pupils with SEMH and behavioural difficulties.

  • Training (Essential): Knowledge or certification in emotional literacy, safeguarding, or restorative practice.

  • Personal Qualities: Exceptional empathy, professional resilience, and an unflappable nature.

  • Compliance: Must possess a current Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service.
