Position Summary

The Laboratory Section Supervisor is responsible for monitoring and participating in all aspects of daily operations in an assigned section, including supervising personnel, ensuring quality and compliance, and maintaining efficient laboratory workflows.

Responsibilities
  • Provides daily supervision of personnel and reporting of tests.
  • Monitors workflow, evaluates compliance with service guarantees and quality control requirements.
  • Works cooperatively with all customers and responds effectively to meet or exceed the customer’s needs.
  • Monitors customer service satisfaction and addresses issues in a timely manner.
  • Orients and trains team members in the department.
  • Completes performance competency evaluations and coaching plans.
  • Recognizes and rewards performance, and addresses disciplinary actions for all team members of an assigned section.
  • Schedules staff to meet workload requirements while minimizing expenses.
  • Assumes bench responsibilities as needed and regularly performs testing to maintain proficiency.
  • Performs and reports routine and special laboratory testing following established policies and procedures to ensure high-quality results within established timeframes.
  • Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Monitors test analysis to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance and takes corrective actions as required.
  • Evaluates team competency, monitors test results, worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing, and maintenance logs.
  • Evaluates new test methodologies and instrumentation, making recommendations to the laboratory manager.
  • Implements new test methods and procedures under the direction of the laboratory manager and medical director.
  • Supports the manager in maintaining the operational budget within budgetary constraints.
  • Orders supplies, monitors inventory control, productivity, and testing utilization.
  • Develops and ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures for test performance, quality control, and maintenance according to regulatory standards.
  • Monitors workflow and delegates responsibilities to team members.
  • Communicates regularly with the manager on daily operations.
  • Manages human resources functions including hiring, work assignments, coaching, and performance counseling.
  • Maintains regular, punctual attendance in accordance with hospital policies and applicable laws.
  • Ensures compliance with all hospital policies and procedures.
  • Understands all laboratory areas and can fulfill team leader responsibilities across departments as needed.
  • Participates actively in the laboratory’s quality improvement programs.
  • Enforces safety and infection control practices.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and hospital information.
  • Supports consistency and standardization across laboratory sites to ensure quality patient care.
Qualifications

Education/Training

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Lab Technology required. Other relevant bachelor’s degrees may be considered if the correct coursework was completed.

Licensure/Certification

Active Medical Technologist certification through ASCP, AAB, or AMT required at the time of hire and must be maintained.

Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of laboratory experience required.
