Job summary

QinetiQ is seeking a Supervising Electronics Engineer at the BUTEC sites in Kyle of Lochalsh and Applecross to lead maintenance, development, testing and deployment of electronic systems supporting maritime range instrumentation, underwater tracking, communications, and data acquisition capabilities.

You will supervise a team of engineers and technicians, provide technical guidance, plan projects from concept to implementation and ensure safety, compliance and reliability of critical assets

Qualifications

• Significant experience in electronics engineering in defence/maritime/industrial environments.
• Experience supervising engineering teams and managing technical work programmes.
• Strong knowledge of electronic test equipment and fault-finding techniques.
• Experience producing technical documentation and engineering procedures.
• Experience with underwater instrumentation, sonar, RF comms, telemetry, or data acquisition.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate maintenance, development, testing, and deployment of electronic systems supporting BUTEC's maritime range instrumentation and data acquisition.
• Supervise a team of engineers and technicians, provide technical guidance and oversee project delivery.
• Plan and manage engineering projects from concept through implementation.
• Provide engineering support to range operations and trials as required.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and engineering standards.

The Role

The Supervising Electronics Engineer is responsible for leading and coordinating the maintenance, development, testing, and deployment of electronic systems that support BUTEC's maritime range instrumentation, underwater tracking, communications, and data acquisition capabilities. The role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, ensuring engineering activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with operational requirements.

Day-to-day, you will supervise a team of engineers and technicians, provide technical guidance, oversee project delivery, and support the continued reliability and availability of critical range assets.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Leadership & Supervision – Lead, mentor and supervise Electronics Engineers and Electronic Technicians
• Engineering & Technical Support - Provide technical expertise for electronic systems associated with maritime instrumentation, communications, telemetry, tracking, and data acquisition systems
• Project Management - Plan and manage engineering projects from concept through to implementation
• Operational Support - Provide engineering support to range operations and trials as required
• Quality, Safety & Compliance - Ensure compliance with company policies, health and safety legislation, and engineering standards

Essential experience of the Supervising Electronics Engineer

• Significant experience in electronics engineering within a defence, maritime, industrial, telecommunications, or similar technical environment
• Proven experience supervising engineering teams and managing technical work programmes
• Strong knowledge of electronic test equipment, fault-finding techniques, and system integration
• Experience producing technical documentation, reports, and engineering procedures
• Experience with underwater instrumentation, sonar systems, RF communications, telemetry, or data acquisition systems

Essential qualifications for the Supervising Electronics Engineer

• Knowledge of networked electronic systems and industrial control systems

This role is 37 hours per week based at the BUTEC sites, Kyle of Lochalsh and Applecross and is based full time onsite.

BUTEC

BUTEC (British Underwater Test & Evaluation Centre) is a specialised facility focused on underwater testing and evaluation. It supports the development and assessment of various maritime systems including submarines, autonomous underwater vehicles and naval munitions. Working towards the advancement of underwater technology including innovations in sonar, navigation and communication systems in real-world scenarios.
