Job summary

STRABAG UK Limited seeks an experienced Pit Boss with proven shaft sinking expertise to lead workforce and subcontractors on site in Bolton. You will drive project delivery, manage operations and uphold health, safety and environmental standards on major tunneling and shaft projects.

You will apply knowledge of SCL, segmental linings and BS6164, supervise heavy plant operations, and coordinate engineers, management and crews to optimise schedule and cost while maintaining quality.

Qualifications

• Experience with shaft sinking using SCL and segmental linings.
• Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and excavation support sheets.
• Demonstrated safety leadership and quality control on major projects.

Responsibilities

• Directs site operations, manages subcontractors and coordinates daily workloads for plant and labour.
• Sets the highest standards for health, safety and environmental compliance.
• Ensures works align with project specifications, programme and budget.
• Interprets drawings and excavation support sheets to determine efficient methods.

We are seeking an experienced Pit Boss, with a proven background in various shaft sinking construction methods, to lead workforce and subcontractors, manage site operations, drive project delivery and maintain the highest standards for health, safety and environment.

Skills/Experience

• Previous experience in shaft sinking using SCL and segmental lining.
• Experience/knowledge of working on a major project.
• Experience acting as a Pit Boss.
• In depth knowledge of BS6164.
• Experienced in SCL tunnel & adit works.
• Drives Health and Safety Standards.
• Excellent organisational, planning and time management skills.
• Able to manage projects simultaneously without compromising on standards and quality.

• SMSTS Trained.
• TSTS - Tunnel Safety Training Scheme.
• Safety Critical Medical.

• Demonstrated success in a Pit Boss role for shaft sinking works, specifically focusing on underpinning & caisson of segmental linings, SCL for shafts, adits and groundwater management in line with BS 6164 requirements.
• Strong understanding of heavy plant operations.
• Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and excavation support sheets.
• Determining efficient methodologies for works delivery and communicating these to engineers, management and workforce or subcontractors.
• Supporting the project behavioural safety programme to maintain a high performing, collaborative culture within the team.
• Directing site operations, managing subcontractors and coordinating daily workloads for plant and labour.
• Setting the highest standards for health and safety and environmental compliance.
• Ensuring all works are completed in accordance with project specifications.
• Ensuring all works are delivered in accordance with the programme and budget, identifying strategies to improve schedule and cost performance.
