READING MUNICIPAL LIGHT DEPARTMENT
SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM
TEMPORARY STUDENT INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

There are three conditional temporary student internship opportunities available at RMLD for the Summer of 2025. Each is an on-site position located at 230 Ash Street, Reading, MA 01867. The intern positions are assigned specific work hours that differ according to the needs and demands of each division. Please review the following descriptions. Upon application, RMLD will consider each applicant for all of the three openings. However, any applicant who is only interested in working in a particular division should indicate so in their cover letter.


CUSTOMER SERVICE, IRD DIVISION INTERN

Hours: Monday-Thursday 7:30AM to 5:30PM

The Customer Service Intern assists with the day-to-day support the Customer Service Team provides. The position is in a fast-paced environment and requires organizational skills, a professional demeanor, ability to multi-task and prioritize, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate information appropriately and sometimes under difficult situations.

Job activities typically include:

  • Performing complete customer service and support duties to meet evolving customer demands.
  • Addressing and reaching resolution on customer inquiries.
  • Assisting with maintenance of the front counter by processing payments and handling customer inquiries using RMLD's CRM and billing software.
  • Assisting in managing the reception area to ensure effective in-person, telephone, and mail communications both internally and externally.
  • Retrieving daily mail off site and distributing/coordinating incoming and outgoing mail packages accordingly.

Desired Skills/Education:

OPERATIONS DIVISION INTERN

Hours: Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:00pm or 7:00am-3:00pm

The Operations Division Intern assists mostly with office work and some field work for the Operations Division, Overhead Line group.

The different projects assigned will include but are not limited to:

  • Working with the Overhead Line group assisting General Line Foreman and Assistant General Line Foreman.
  • Tracking and mapping of performed work.
  • Assisting with miscellaneous office reports, spreadsheets, assigned projects, and field support.

Desired Skills/Education:

  • Electrical engineering background
  • Some experience with GIS or Google mapping
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office - Excel, Teams, Word
  • Class D Driver's License valid in MA

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE DIVISION INTERN

Hours: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:00pm

The Accounting and Finance Division Intern assists with office work for the Division.

The different projects assigned will include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Staff Accountant in preparing Accounts Payable Warrant.
  • Assisting the Manager of Accounting in performing reconciliations of certain accounts.
  • Assisting with miscellaneous office reports, spreadsheets, assigned projects, and field support.
  • Assisting the Director of Finance and Accounting on other tasks as directed.

Desired Skills/Education:

  • Knowledge of General Principles of Accounting
  • Experience with Microsoft Office - Excel, Teams, Word

Intern Position Responsibilities:
  • Understand the overall concept of the company, our purpose, including the needs of our service.
  • Work within their particular division's responsibilities and provide ideas to grow and improve the business.
  • Accept designated, business-focused projects to research, propose ideas and solutions, and may be asked to present final project during the internship.
  • Engage with customers or vendors and provide service.
  • Provide suggestions to management for improving customer service and internal processes.
  • Learn and become proficient on internal software systems.

Education and Experience Requirements / Preferences:

Compensation Range:

$20 - 28 per hour
