Job summary

National Grid is seeking a Substation Project Supervisor to lead on-site delivery across the South of London region. You will act as National Grid’s on-site representative, overseeing construction activities and ensuring safety, quality and compliance on HV installations built to required standards.

The role requires strong stakeholder management, coordination of contractors, and adherence to CDM regulations. A level 3 NVQ/ONC or equivalent and a full UK driving license are essential.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 NVQ, ONC, or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering, construction or technical discipline.
  • Proven experience as Site Supervisor/Manager within utilities, infrastructure, engineering or construction.
  • Good understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.
  • Experience working with Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) requirements.
  • Awareness of project, contract and stakeholder management principles.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

  • Act as National Grid’s on-site representative for a range of transmission construction projects.
  • Oversee the safe delivery of works including HV transformer and shunt reactor installations, cable replacements, cyber security upgrades, and protection and control system replacements.
  • Ensure all site activities are delivered in compliance with safety, environmental and quality standards.
  • Support project teams in meeting Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations and industry best practice.
  • Carry out site inspections, safety audits and quality assurance checks.
  • Lead and coordinate site meetings with contractors, stakeholders and delivery teams.
  • Support scheme development through site visits, reporting and collaboration with design teams.
  • Assist with the procurement and management of plant, equipment and site resources.
  • Build effective relationships with contractors and stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Act as Principal Contractor Representative or Site Manager when required, providing additional leadership and development opportunities.

National Grid is hiring a Substation Project Supervisor - This role is based in South of London
Job purpose

As a National Grid Representative, you’ll play a vital role in shaping the future of the UK's electricity network. Supporting the delivery of projects ranging from £100k to £10m, you’ll help strengthen and expand the transmission network, enabling more renewable and low-carbon energy to reach homes and businesses across the UK.

Working across the South East region, including Hampshire, Sussex and Kent, you’ll oversee the safe and efficient delivery of site-based construction activities, ensuring work is completed to the highest standards of safety, quality and compliance. You’ll act as National Grid’s on-site representative, working closely with contractors, suppliers and internal teams to deliver critical infrastructure projects that keep the country’s electricity network running reliably.

About you

We’re looking for someone with experience supervising construction or infrastructure projects within utilities, engineering, energy or a similar regulated environment. You’ll be passionate about safety, enjoy working collaboratively on site, and be confident managing multiple stakeholders to deliver successful outcomes.

Essential
  • Level 3 NVQ, ONC, or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering, construction or technical discipline.
  • Proven experience as a Site Supervisor, Site Manager, Project Lead or similar role within utilities, infrastructure, engineering or construction.
  • Good understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.
  • Experience working with Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) requirements.
  • Awareness of project, contract and stakeholder management principles.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualification.
  • Experience acting as a Principal Contractor Representative, Site Manager or Temporary Works Coordinator.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems and delivery under NEC contracts.
  • NEBOSH or IOSH qualification.
  • Experience delivering projects within electricity transmission, power, utilities or other critical infrastructure environments.

What you’ll get
  • A Salary up to £57,000 pa including allowance + Contribution Pension total up to 18%.
  • London Allowance and Market supplements are applicable to this role.
  • Company Car, Bonus, Paid overtime.
  • 37 Hours per week Monday to Friday + 26 days annual leave plus 8 statutory days.
