About the Role
The Subeditor Team Leader role is a fast-paced and engaging position that involves leading a small team of subeditors to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and readability in Nature’s magazine content. The successful candidate will be comfortable reading and writing about all fields of science, take pride in being a stickler for grammar and facts and enjoy working as part of a close-knit team to publish engaging content both in print and online.
This role is based in our London office on a hybrid working model.
Role Responsibilities:
Sub-editing
oSub-edit material accepted or written for publication by Nature as directed by the Chief Subeditor
Production
oCorrect proofs, artwork and pages during the production process, to ensure that the pages are finished to the appropriate standard for output.
Managing
oLine manage team of subeditors
Mentoring and training
oHelp to mentor and train the sub-editing team.
Recruitment
oAssist with recruitment of new team members.
Writing
oWrite headlines and captions for Nature material as required.
Maintenance of standards
oAdvise Nature editors on matters of house style and use of English.
Website
oEnsure that Nature material is correctly and appropriately displayed on Nature’s website.
Projects
oUndertake and oversee additional projects with the team (for example, maintenance of the Style Guide)
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
Essential
• Degree in a scientific discipline is preferred.
• Good literacy skills
• Demonstrable ability to proofread text and artwork.
• Excellent written and spoken communication skills, tact, diplomacy, discretion.
• Attention to detail
• Knowledge of word-processing — in particular Adobe InDesign — and other relevant IT skills.
• Ability to work in a team
• Ability to prioritise a variety of tasks
• Strong time management
• Broad interest in and understanding of science
• Flexibility
• Ability to cope under pressure
• Tact in dealing with authors and colleagues
