Job Description:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London is a world leading centre for the study of Mechanical Engineering. The department’s Student Teaching Workshop is a unique student manufacturing resource that provides practical training and manual machining facilities to over 700 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The team of teaching workshop technicians offer design and manufacturing advice to support students in their coursework and design projects.
We are seeking a Technician to join our team of experienced teaching workshop technicians. In this role, you will utilise our state-of-the-art workshop facilities to coach students in workshop manufacturing technology and support them in bringing their project and prototype designs to life.
- You will teach and supervise students in manual machining, providing hands-on guidance to use workshop equipment and manufacturing techniques.
- You will support students with design and manufacturing advice, offering practical feedback and innovative solutions for their projects.
- You will provide a manufacturing service in areas such as laser cutting, 3D printing, vacuum forming and woodworking.
- You will ensure strict adherence to safety practices, delivering training and inductions for new users.
- You will collaborate with students, technicians, and the wider technical team to enhance the student learning experience.
- You will manage workloads to meet teaching deadlines while continuously developing your own skills in line with course requirements.
- You must have experience in an Engineering or Design discipline or be educated to a minimum BTEC/HNC standard, or equivalent.
- Experience of operating manual machine tools, using technical drawings and teaching practical skills is essential.
- You should have a strong knowledge of health & safety practice in the workshop.
- Experience of using additive manufacturing and laser cutting and working in a manufacturing workshop environment is desirable.
- Knowledge of 3D CAD software and machining techniques is desirable.
