Job description

We are building an open, beginner-friendly online resource to help students and early-career researchers gain confidence with coding practices. This role will focus on creating the “Principles of Good Code Writing” section of the site—a non-technical guide to writing code that is clear, organised, and maintainable, regardless of the programming language.

This is not a tutorial in coding, but a conceptual, practical guide to thinking about how to write better code, structure projects, and document work in a way that is easy to understand—for yourself and others.

We’re looking for a thoughtful and clear communicator to design and write simple, well-structured content that introduces good coding practices in plain language. The ideal candidate doesn’t need to be an expert programmer but should understand and be able to reflect on what makes code readable, reusable, and easier to collaborate on.

Responsibilities

  • Write content for a beginner-friendly guide to good code writing practices
  • Organize content into 5–7 short sections or modules
  • Use analogies, diagrams, and real-world examples to explain concepts
  • Collaborate with a web developer to format and upload the content to the site
  • Participate in regular meetings with project leads
  • Revise materials based on feedback from project leads or test readers

Example Content Topics

  • What does “good code” mean? (Clarity, simplicity, maintainability)
  • Naming things well (Variables, functions, files)
  • Writing readable code (Consistent formatting, line length, whitespace)
  • Commenting and documenting (When to comment, how to write helpful comments)
  • Breaking code into chunks (Functions, modules, reuse)
  • Don’t Repeat Yourself (DRY) and other key principles
  • Making your future self (or collaborator) happy – code for humans first
  • Common mistakes to avoid (Over-commenting, unclear logic, lack of structure)
Remote work - must be based in the UK for the duration of the work.
Person Specification
  • Ability to communicate clearly and explain technical ideas in accessible, beginner-friendly language
  • Understanding of what makes code readable, reusable, and easy to maintain
  • Awareness of good practices in commenting, structuring, and naming code elements
  • Strong written communication and organisation skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
