Job Description
A leading construction business is seeking an experienced Structural Steel Design Manager to oversee and manage a team of designers and detailers for a project in London. With a strong focus on self-delivery, the business manages complex projects, often involving bespoke structural and temporary steelwork solutions.
The Structural Steel Design Manager will lead the design and detailing of structural steelwork packages delivered directly by the business. This hands-on leadership role requires a deep understanding of connection design, steel fabrication, and practical buildability. The successful candidate will bring experience from a Tier 2 contractor or specialist subcontractor environment and be confident managing internal design processes while liaising with site, fabrication, and delivery teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and coordinate all technical aspects of in-house steelwork design and detailing
Oversee the production and approval of fabrication drawings and connection designs
Ensure designs are practical, buildable, and compliant with Eurocodes and project specifications
Work closely with construction, project management, and fabrication teams to ensure successful delivery
Provide technical input during tender, pre-construction, and delivery phases
Mentor and support junior engineers and detailers within the business
Maintain design quality and consistency across multiple concurrent projects
Candidate Requirements:
Degree-qualified in Structural or Civil Engineering (BEng/MEng/BSc)
Proven experience in structural steel design and detailing
Hands-on experience with connection design and practical detailing (Tekla Structures proficiency )
Strong background in Tier 2 contracting or structural steel subcontracting
Solid understanding of fabrication methods, erection sequencing, and construction coordination
Excellent communication and leadership skills
