Job description

Role: Structural Engineer

Location: Wigan

Salary: Up to £48,000 depending on experience

We are currently looking for a highly motivated Structural Engineer for our Wigan based client. The successful Structural Engineer will be responsible for specialist structural engineering design projects from inception to practical completion across all sectors (including workplace, residential, life science, education, retail, hotels, hospitality, sports and leisure).

The role requires producing detailed design to meet with design and construction programmes, liaising with other disciplines and ensuring the coordination of design and detailing work appropriate to the project.

The Structural Engineer responsibilities:

As a Structural Engineer your responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Carrying out structural surveys of building/desk studies and providing initial advice on any issues that may arise
  2. Preparing conceptual and outline designs for structural schemes with support of the wider team
  3. Preparing detailed design calculations to Eurocode and relevant design guidance notes using relevant 3D software packages
  4. Preparing detailed design drawings and specifications for tender purposes
  5. Responding to client requests for information
  6. Supporting the production of construction information for issue to contractors
  7. Visiting sites during the construction phase to monitor progress and provide advice to contractors
  8. Day-to-day support to colleagues from other disciplines within the office
  9. Attending team meetings with both internal and external disciplines
  10. You will have the opportunity over time to assume greater levels of responsibility and autonomy as your professional skills develop, and you will be supported towards Chartership through IStructE / ICE.
Required skills:
  1. Experience of structural design in concrete, steel and timber structures, as well as experience in other structural materials
  2. Experience of working with Eurocode and other local design guidance
  3. Knowledge and interest in sustainable design and embodied carbon evaluation
  4. A strong analytical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, combined with practical understanding of buildings and construction
  5. A desire to work constructively in a team, finding holistic building design solutions
  6. A good understanding of multidisciplinary requirements into coordinated solutions
  7. Good communication and interpersonal skills
  8. Computer literate with knowledge of design and analysis programmes
  9. Understanding of the health & safety regulations and designer's responsibilities
Qualifications and experience:
  1. A good degree in Engineering
  2. Experience, competency and flexibility to rise to challenging situations and take on responsibility appropriate to their capability
  3. It is expected that the successful candidate will have at least 3 years' experience in the area of Structural Engineering.
