Job Description:

Amey is a leading provider of full life-cycle engineering, operations, and decarbonisation solutions for transport infrastructure and complex facilities.

Working with us, you'll deliver sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance life and protect our shared future.

Our people are driven by strong values based on safety, insight, and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have fantastic opportunities for permanent Lead Structures Engineer/Senior Structures Engineer/Structural Engineer at all levels to join our award-winning and growing Consulting Structures Team in the South West. The role involves working on the South West Scheme Delivery Framework for National Highways, with opportunities across the UK. Our team co-locates with our client at offices in Exeter and Bristol, attending three days a week in the office and remotely on other days.

The work ranges from feasibility and optioneering to design and construction, across the National Highways network in the South West, including viaducts, culverts, and bridges of varying types and complexities. Projects may include strengthening schemes, refurbishments, or safety improvements, with no two projects being the same.

This role suits a developing Engineer working towards Chartership or with Incorporated status, with knowledge of DMRB and Eurocodes related to highway bridge design, strengthening, refurbishment, and assessment. It offers the chance to see the impact of your work on a local network daily. You will be part of a team of around 25 engineers locally, supported by over 350 Structures Engineers across the UK, with a focus on organic growth. As an Engineer, you will contribute to this growth and gain valuable career development exposure.

The role

As a Senior Structures Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on various Structures schemes, lead projects, and mentor junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team and producing sound engineering solutions.
  • Owning and leading projects from start to finish, including quotations and handover.
  • Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
  • Overseeing junior staff and ensuring their actions meet standards.
  • Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Delegated Engineer.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives, attending meetings, and responding to queries.
  • Managing a small, locally based technical team and their workload.
  • Participating in bid preparation and work-winning activities.
  • Promoting effective Health and Safety practices within the team.

What you will bring to us:

  • Experience and expertise in the Structures field, likely gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Ability to produce or oversee technically sound engineering solutions complying with standards and client requirements.
  • Ownership of deliverables, with capability to review them to a reasonable standard.
  • Proficiency with relevant software (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
  • Good commercial awareness.
  • Understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
  • Experience managing hazards and risks, with appropriate mitigation.
  • Understanding of interface management and ensuring alignment across disciplines.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status with ICE or IStructE, or equivalent professional license, desirable or essential depending on the contract.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant subject or equivalent further learning.
