Stroke Specialist Doctor

Join the dedicated stroke team at Ashford & St Peter's as a Specialist Stroke Doctor, providing high-quality, patient-centered care under the supervision and mentorship of experienced doctors, consultants, and a multidisciplinary team. This role involves delivering direct clinical care, assisting in clinical decision-making, and sharing equally in the department's workload to ensure comprehensive senior clinical cover.

Key responsibilities include the assessment and management of patients, covering ward rounds, multi-disciplinary team meetings, and stroke and TIA clinics. The specialist doctor will aid consultants in reviewing potential admissions, developing rapid assessment triage strategies, and ensuring timely investigations and patient disposition. This will serve as part of training and development towards providing thrombolysis.

This position requires a strong general internal medicine knowledge and the role will provide the opportunity to spend one day a week on the general internal medicine rota in A&E, the clinical assessment unit or the short stay unit.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide direct clinical care and share in the department's workload. Including taking the lead on Stroke Calls.
  • Assist in patient assessments, ward rounds, multi-disciplinary meetings, and radiology meetings.
  • Support consultants in reviewing admissions and developing triage strategies. Including the use of thrombolysis and CT Perfusion assessment pathways.
  • Participate in clinical audits, governance activities, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in professional development, research, and continuing medical education.

Responsibilities extend to administrative duties associated with patient care, collaborating with A&E consultants to enhance stroke patient management, and achieving clinical quality targets such as the 4-hour waiting time target. A clear understanding of stroke service commissioning, contracting, and regional strategy is required.

The specialist doctor will also cover colleagues during leave periods, participate in clinical audit activities, and ensure proper patient handover. Active engagement in clinical leadership, improving patient experience, and delivering high-quality care alongside medical, nursing, and management teams is expected.

Additionally, the role involves contributing to the education and professional development of the department's staff, including supervision of junior medical staff and involvement in recruitment, appraisal, and mentoring activities. Teaching certification verification is required for training responsibilities.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MRCP, FRCP or equivalent medical qualification
  • Higher degree (PhD; MD) or Mphil
  • Desire to work and/or working towards CESR/CCT
Experience
  • Completion of at least four years full time postgraduate training
  • Eligible for full GMC registration at time of appointment
  • Experience in UK General Medicine including Stroke
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice
Skills
  • Relevant speciality knowledge and demonstrable experience in Stroke Medicine including Hyper Acute patient management, acute patient management, stroke call assessment and management, collaboration with MDT members, and general internal medicine application.
  • Up to date provider in ALS or equivalent courses.
Clinical Governance
  • Demonstrable experience of clinical governance management including mortality and morbidity, rapid reviews, auditing.
