Job summary

Equans is seeking a General Operative to support the Kent LED street lighting contract from our Sittingbourne depot. You will assist with installation, fault-finding, and maintenance of street lighting assets, while upholding safety policies and BS7671 standards.

The role requires man‑handling tools, PPE discipline, and accurate record-keeping. Ideal candidates hold GCSEs in Maths/English/Science, an ECS Card, and a full UK driving licence, with willingness to learn further qualifications.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs Maths, English and Science at grade 4/C or above.
  • ECS Card held and valid.
  • Full clean UK driving licence required.
  • Willingness to progress and obtain relevant qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Install & maintain street lighting assets (columns, lanterns, cabling, EV chargers) and related control gear.
  • Carry out fault-finding, basic electrical checks, and safety compliance.
  • Prepare tools/equipment; keep work areas and vehicles safe and tidy.
  • Record work completed, materials used, and asset data on handheld devices or job sheets.
  • Interact professionally with the public, colleagues and contractors on site.

Job description

Join Equans, a leading energies and services contractor and a proud member of the global industrial group, Bouygues. With a rich history of excellence in designing, constructing, and maintaining buildings and critical infrastructure worldwide, we are now offering an exciting opportunity for a General Operative within our Connected Cities business supporting our Kent LED street lighting contract. This will be based from our depot in Sittingbourne.


Key activities


  • Installation & Maintenance Support

  • Undertake the installation, repair, and maintenance of street lighting assets, including columns, lanterns, cabling, EV Charge points and control equipment.

  • Undertake fault-finding activities and carry out basic electrical checks.

  • Safety Compliance

  • Follow all safety policies, risk assessments, and method statements when working on highways and electrical systems.

  • Use PPE correctly and promptly report hazards, near misses, or unsafe conditions.

  • Worksite Preparation & Support

  • Prepare tools, equipment, and materials needed for site tasks.

  • Maintain clean, safe, and organised work areas and vehicles.

  • Record Keeping

  • Assist with accurate recording of work completed, materials used, and asset information using handheld devices or job sheets.

  • Customer & Public Interaction

  • Behave professionally when interacting with the public, colleagues, or contractors on site.

  • Represent the organisation positively, ensuring minimal disruption to road users and communities.

  • Quality & Standards

  • Carry out tasks to the required technical and quality standards to BS7671

  • Report defects, asset issues, or installation concerns promptly.


Skills, Qualifications & Experience


  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and Science – Grade 4/C or above.

  • Willingness to progress and learn new skills and obtain relevant qualifications

  • ECS Card.

  • Full Clean UK driving licence.

  • BS7671 Level 2,

  • BS7671 Level 3,

  • 2391 Electrical test & Inspection,

  • 714 Test & Inspection

  • Awareness of street lighting components such as lanterns, photocells, drivers, control gear, and columns.

  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and basic electrical test equipment.

  • Competence in working at height and using access equipment (e.g., ladders, MEWPs).

  • Strong awareness of safe working practices, including PPE, risk assessments, and method statements.
