Overview

Pen Underwriting are looking for a Strategic Business Development Analyst to help drive the growth of the business. This role primarily focuses on driving both inorganic growth and strategy, with a 50% emphasis on each. The main responsibilities include increasing the growth of Pen Underwriting through acquisitions, strategic hires, innovation and effectively communicating the Pen narrative to key stakeholders both internally and externally. Day to Day tasks include:

  • M&A: Assisting with sourcing and pipelining M&A opportunities, and working on due diligence and ad-hoc requests for live opportunities to facilitate smooth transaction process
  • Strategy: Researching, preparing, and presenting to Pen’s executive team on the company’s strategy and market landscape
  • Innovation: Assisting with innovation projects to enhance Pen’s product suite, new product, technology, geography etc. This may involve extensive research, preparing and analysing business cases for live opportunities, with the goal of driving Pen profitably towards our £1.75bn GWP target by 2030. This will also involve maintaining an interest in industry news, technology, and the overall insurance value chain
  • Ad-Hoc Projects: Supporting the division and Pen executive team with a broad variety of tasks, from information gathering and market research, to strategy and thought leadership, through to internal / external presentations. No 2 days are the same!

How you'll make an impact

Job Responsibilities:

  • Critical thinking is crucial, and the ability to think from first principles will be tested during the recruitment process.
  • Relationship building and being a self-starter are important qualities. The candidate should be willing to proactively build relationships with individuals they have never met before
  • The candidate should be comfortable working in ambiguous situations and be able to get things done despite significant uncertainty.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential. The candidate should be able to effectively communicate with senior stakeholders and build rapport.
  • The ability to prioritize and clearly communicate priorities is important, as the candidate will be managing multiple projects and live deals for senior stakeholders, often with tight deadlines.
  • The candidate should have a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the insurance and financial sector and be willing to enhance their knowledge through qualifications such as the ACII and CFA.
  • Having a small ego and being willing to take on any task, no matter how menial, is a must.
  • The candidate should be highly numerate
