Job summary

Manpower, Inc. in Scunthorpe is seeking a reliable Multi-Skilled Dock Operative / Stevedore to join our port operations team. The role involves cargo handling across vessels, quaysides, terminals and storage facilities, ensuring safe and efficient cargo movement and smooth vessel turnarounds.

You will work with crane operators, coordinate cargo handling activities, and follow health and safety procedures. CHIPS qualification and flexibility to work shifts between 6:00am and 10:00pm are required;

Qualifications

• Experience in stevedoring, port, logistics, cargo handling, warehouse, or similar operational environment.
• Comfortable with manual handling and physical labour.
• Willing to undertake CHIPS qualification and any required training.
• Capable of working safely in fast-paced environments and following health and safety procedures.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Flexible hours, including shifts between 6:00am and 10:00pm.

Responsibilities

• Work within vessel holds during cargo loading and discharge operations with visual oversight of movements.
• Direct crane operators using hand signals and radio communications for accurate loading/discharge.
• Coordinate cargo handling activities and allocate tasks to ensure safety and efficiency.
• Liaise with supervisors, vessel crews, and dockside teams to follow cargo plans and vessel requirements.
• Follow procedures and health and safety regulations; perform shore-side cargo handling across yards and terminals.
• Assist with loading, unloading, transfer, securing, positioning, and storage of cargo types.
• Move cargo between vessels, warehouses, storage locations and onward transport.
• Undertake general dockside labouring duties as required.

Manpower are currently recruiting for a reliable and hardworking Multi‑Skilled Dock Operative / Stevedore to join their busy port operations team. This is a varied, hands‑on role supporting cargo handling operations across vessels, quaysides, terminals, and storage facilities. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of cargo while contributing to the smooth turnaround of vessels. Key Responsibilities

• Work within vessel holds during cargo loading and discharge operations, maintaining constant visual oversight of cargo movements to ensure safe and efficient handling.
• Direct crane operators using agreed hand signals and radio communications, ensuring the accurate positioning, loading, and discharge of cargo.
• Support and coordinate cargo handling activities, allocating work where required and ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
• Liaise with supervisors, operators, vessel crews, and dockside teams to ensure operations are carried out in accordance with cargo plans and vessel requirements.
• Follow operational plans, shipboard procedures, and safe access protocols, ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations.
• Perform shore-side cargo handling operations across quaysides, terminals, storage facilities, and yard areas.
• Assist with the loading, unloading, transfer, securing, positioning, and storage of a wide range of cargo types.
• Support the movement of cargo between vessels, warehouses, storage locations, and onward transport.
• Undertake general dockside labouring duties as required to support operational demands.

Candidate Requirements

• Previous experience working within a stevedoring, port, logistics, cargo handling, warehouse, or similar operational environment is essential.
• Comfortable working in a physically demanding role involving manual handling and general labouring duties.
• Willingness to undertake and successfully complete the CHIPS qualification and any additional training required.
• Ability to work safely in fast‑paced operational environments and follow strict health and safety procedures.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Flexible approach to working hours, including shifts between 6:00am and 10:00pm.
• Reliable, hardworking, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
