Job summary

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in Llantrisant is seeking a Sterile Services Band 3 technician for a 12-month fixed-term/secondment. The role covers decontamination tasks across theatres, wards and clinical areas, with a 37.5-hour week and rotating shifts.

Responsibilities include cleaning, disinfection, inspection, packing and sterilisation, plus maintaining records, stock control and safe transport of sterile items in line with infection control standards.

Qualifications

• IDSc Technical Certificate or Level 3 Decontamination or equivalent.
• Knowledge of surgical instrumentation.
• Familiar with ISO13485:2016 and UK MDR 2002 (as amended). Welsh speaking/listening Level 3+ is advantageous.

Job overview

Responsible for carrying out tasks related to the decontamination process, including the cleaning, disinfection, inspection, packing, and sterilisation of medical instruments and equipment. These items are prepared to ensure they are safe and ready for use in patient treatment across Theatres, Wards, and other clinical departments, in compliance with established protocols and infection control standards.

Main duties of the job

Carry out all tasks associated with the decontamination process, including:

• Cleaning, disinfection, inspection, packing, and sterilisation of medical instruments and equipment.
• Ensuring all items are prepared to the highest standards for use in Theatres, Wards, and other clinical departments.

Operate and maintain decontamination equipment in accordance with departmental protocols and manufacturer guidelines. Perform quality checks to ensure compliance with infection control and health & safety standards. Accurately record and maintain documentation relating to instrument processing and traceability. Assist with stock control and the safe storage of sterile items. Communicate effectively with colleagues and clinical teams to support service delivery.

• Transport sterile instruments and equipment between hospital sites or departments.
• Ensure safe handling and secure delivery of items in line with HB policies.

Hours of Work: This is a full-time post (37.5 hours per week) supporting a service that operates over a 24-hour period, 7 days a week. The successful candidate will be required to work flexibly and participate in a rota to meet service requirements.

• Institute of Decontamination Sciences (IDSc) Technical Certificate OR Vocational Level 3 Decontamination OR Equivalent level of knowledge, work experience and skills within a decontamination role

Knowledge

• Welsh Language Speaking/Listening Skills at Level 3 or above

Experience
