Job summary

Astronomer in London seeks a Staff+-level platform engineer to design and own our multi-cloud infrastructure and the foundational systems that everything else runs on. You will write strategy, then code to prove it, and you will shape architecture for Astro, Observe, and our IDE at scale.

This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you define requirements, drive technology choices across a distributed team, document decisions, and mentor others as you deliver robust, well-understood systems.

Qualifications

• Deep practical knowledge of distributed systems, failure modes, and scaling.
• Kubernetes at operator depth with real cluster experience under load.
• Strong Go proficiency with production-grade Go code experience.
• Experience across AWS, GCP, and/or Azure with architectural tradeoffs.
• Ability to define requirements and drive technology choices in a large team.
• Strong written and verbal communication, including design docs and postmortems.

Responsibilities

• Own and develop platform infrastructure strategy across multiple clouds.
• Write strategy and code, proving architectural concepts at scale.
• Lead build-vs-buy assessments and advocate for the right tools.
• Create and maintain comprehensive internal documentation and decision records.
