Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for Band 5 nurses to join the Urgent Treatment Centres at New Cross Hospital and Phoenix as part of the Royal Wolverhampton Trust. The role focuses on delivering quality care, with support to learn a range of new skills and triage. Working as a Band 5 triage nurse within the Emergency Directorate offers opportunities to develop knowledge and skills, attend courses and progress in your career. Urgent care is a 24 hour, 7 day a week service and there will be an expectation to work nights.

Job responsibilities

To ensure safe and effective clinical practice.

  • Practice within the NMC Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives
  • Participate in the assessment of patient care needs, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care in accordance with The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust policies and procedures
  • Administer prescribed medication and treatment in a timely manner, in accordance with Trust policies and Professional guidelines
  • Take responsibility for groups of patients as required, with minimal supervision from senior staff
  • Deliver evidence based care and promote the use of evidence based practice
  • Liaise effectively with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure timely delivery of care and develop good working relationships
  • Practice within an ethical framework based upon respect for the well-being and safety of patients
  • Maintain accurate and legible records of care and other documentation in line with Trust and professional standards
  • Take personal responsibility for actions and omissions, and recognise personal accountability
  • Report treatment, care, and any concerns promptly to senior staff to maintain effective communication
  • Report incidents and near misses promptly and take action to minimise future risk
  • Practice in a way that ensures efficient and effective use of resources
  • Critically appraise and synthesize outcomes of relevant research, evaluations and audits and apply information to improve practice

To enhance the patients experience

  • Communicate effectively with patients and relatives to promote involvement, so that they can make informed choices and understand their treatment and planned care
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for staff, patients and visitors, ensuring compliance with health and safety, infection prevention, clinical governance, risk management and incident reporting
  • Act as a positive health educator to enable independence, choice and control
  • Work within defined boundaries of practice
  • Ensure everyone in the sphere of care is treated with dignity and humanity, with compassion and sensitivity, and provide care that respects all people equally

To manage and develop performance of the team and self

  • Undertake Trust and local competencies as required
  • Attend courses and mandatory updates as required by the post
  • Support the Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse with E-rostering and KPIs
  • Prioritise work and manage time effectively; seek assistance when needed
  • Recognise personal limitations and pursue ongoing development
  • Support junior staff, unregistered staff and students
  • Delegate appropriately and assist in induction of new staff
  • Participate in appraisals for ongoing personal development and revalidation
  • Act as a positive role model and contribute to a positive learning environment
  • Support orientation, induction programmes and clinical support strategies for staff and students

To ensure effective contribution to the delivery of the organisation's objectives

  • Adhere to Trust and Directorate policies and participate in audits
  • Assist senior staff to monitor standards of care and contribute to quality
  • Undertake other duties as required within the grade
  • Ensure knowledge and implementation of the organisation’s quality and safety agenda
  • Demonstrate compliance with the NHS Constitution pledges and local professional strategies
  • Promote a positive image of nursing internally and externally
Qualifications and experience

Qualifications

  • Essential: NMC registered nurse
  • Desirable: Triage qualification

Experience

  • Essential: Emergency or Urgent Care experience; minimum of 1 year post registration
