Job description

The Pre-Operative Nurse plays a vital role in preparing patients for surgical and invasive procedures, ensuring safe, evidence-based care in line with NHS standards. Working within the pre-assessment clinic or surgical admissions unit, the nurse is responsible for assessing patients' physical and psychological readiness for surgery, identifying risks, coordinating pre-op investigations, and providing education to promote optimal patient outcomes., + Perform detailed pre-operative assessments including medical history, medication reviews, and baseline observations.
+ Identify and escalate clinical concerns, referring to anaesthetists or surgeons as required.
+ Coordinate pre-op investigations (blood tests, ECGs, MRSA swabs, etc.).
+ Provide patient education on fasting, medication management, and post-operative expectations.
+ Liaise with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to optimise patient care.
+ Document all assessments accurately in line with NHS policies and electronic record-keeping systems.
+ Support patients with anxiety, providing compassionate reassurance and health promotion.
