We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery Unit. This role is a based in our main hospital.

Job Profile

Based primarily in our Plastics and Reconstructive Unit, this role offers a diverse and rewarding experience. The unit is a 17 to 29-bedded ward working in close partnership with other surgical specialties including Gynaecology, ENT, Hepatobiliary, and Thoracic Surgery. Nurses within the team may also support other inpatient surgical areas depending on operational needs.

You will deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to a varied group of patients, with nurse-to-patient ratios typically ranging between 1:4 and 1:5. The post requires flexibility to work day and night shifts as part of a rota.

Prior experience in plastics or reconstructive surgery is advantageous, however, we welcome applicants with general surgical ward experience. Comprehensive training and development opportunities will be provided to support your transition into this specialty.

  • Job Type: This is a full-time, permanent position working 37.5 hours per week.

Key Duties

  • Deliver individualised nursing care aligned with best practice guidelines to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centred outcomes.
  • Manage admissions, discharges, and transfers efficiently to support timely patient flow and reduce delays in care.
  • Carry out post-operative monitoring, wound care and pain management to support safe recovery and minimise complications.
  • Administer medications and intravenous therapies in line with policy to ensure accurate and timely treatment delivery.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to provide coordinated and holistic patient care.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and documentation to support continuity of care and meet legal requirements.
  • Escalate clinical concerns appropriately and participate in emergency response to ensure patient safety is upheld at all times.
  • Mentor junior colleagues and student nurse to support learning and maintain high professional standards.
  • Contribute to audits, quality improvement initiatives and service development to drive continuous improvement across the unit.
  • Comply with infection prevention, safety protocols and professional regulations to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.

Skills & Experience:

  • NMC-registered Nurse with post-registration experience in an acute surgical ward setting
  • Confident in managing a range of surgical patients across the pre- and post-operative pathway
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Able to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Committed to ongoing professional development and high standards of care
  • Previous experience within a plastics or reconstructive surgery setting is desirable but not essential.
