Job summary

University Hospital Southampton is seeking a permanent staff nurse for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. The role focuses on individualised nursing care, training learners, and contributing to a 24-hour retrieval service and nurse-led ECMO.

Applicants should be post-preceptorship, with critical care experience considered from adult nurses. The post involves day and night shifts, with a 50/50 pattern and opportunities to participate in cutting-edge paediatric critical care and patient-family

Qualifications

• Qualified nurse (degree or diploma).
• Registered nurse on the appropriate part of the register.
• Post-preceptorship experience in paediatric or critical care.
• Experience teaching and supporting learners in practice as a practice supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.
• Deliver high-quality care to patients and relatives.
• Provide one-to-one level 3 nursing care.
• Train learners and other nursing staff on the ward.
• Work a 50% day and 50% night shift pattern across a 24-hour cycle.

Job description

This permanent staff nurse post sits in the paediatric intensive care unit at University Hospital Southampton, a 15-bed regional lead centre for critically ill children. The work centres on individualised nursing care and training learners on the ward. Shifts split evenly between days and nights, with a 24-hour retrieval service and nurse-led ECMO. Applicants must be post-preceptorship, and adult nurses with critical care experience may also be considered.

What the job involves

• Provide individualised nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for each patient, in line with agreed policies
• Provide safe, high-quality care to patients and their relatives
• Deliver one-to-one level 3 nursing care
• Train learners and other nursing staff on the ward
• Work a 50% day and 50% night shift pattern across the 24-hour cycle

Qualifications

• Qualified nurse (degree or diploma)

Registration & licences

• Registered nurse on the appropriate part of the register

Experience

• Post-preceptorship
• Experience in an acute paediatric or critical care setting
• Evidence of teaching and supporting learners in practice as a practice supervisor

Skills & knowledge

• Knowledge of current issues in the acute health service
• Understanding of personal accountability and own role within the team
• Awareness of evidence-based practice
• Awareness of responsibilities for infection control management
• Able to use initiative
