Job description

This is a rewarding but demanding post that requires committed and dedicated nurses to provide quality care to infants, children, young people, and their families/carers from a diverse population. We offer all of our Band 5 Staff Nurses the opportunity to undertake a nurse-in-charge programme, so if you are an experienced nurse looking for more responsibility then we will positively support your development.

The Paediatric A&E Department at Hillingdon Hospital is a separate unit based within the main A&E Department. On average, 25% of our emergency attendances are infants, children, and young people. We endeavour to provide the highest possible level of care to them at all times. The department has close links with paediatric wards, specialist nurses, and our community nursing team.

Consideration will be given to newly-qualified nurses, as we offer a comprehensive preceptorship programme and an opportunity to undertake a rotation on the children's inpatient ward and neonatal unit, if desired.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Under the supervision of senior colleagues, be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care.
  2. Act as an associate mentor to student nurses in training and mentor once Mentorship in Practice course completed.
  3. Facilitate the professional and clinical development of paediatric practice through research, under supervision of senior colleagues.
  4. Provide clinical support to infants', children's, and young people's Emergency Department, under supervision.
  5. Ensure communication regarding the child's care is appropriate and understandable to both the child and family.
  6. Ensure patient documentation is accurate and legible, and be aware of the legal implications.
  7. Assess child's individual needs and recognize when a child is sick to initiate urgent care when necessary.
  8. Support senior colleagues with the introduction and implementation of new nursing care methods.

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon, offering a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics, and maternity services. Services at Mount Vernon Hospital include routine day surgery, a minor injuries unit, and outpatient clinics.

We prioritize the safety and well-being of our patients and staff, working in partnership with local GPs, charities, community services, academic partners, local authorities, neighboring hospitals, and the wider North West London Integrated Care System. Our focus remains on providing high-quality, safe, and compassionate care while building the new Hillingdon Hospital.

With over 3,500 staff members, we care for nearly half a million people. Our vision is to be an outstanding healthcare provider through leading partnerships and service transformation.

We seek a motivated children's nurse to join our friendly, dynamic team. Candidates should have recent Children's Emergency Care experience or placements, demonstrate excellent communication and assessment skills, and be flexible. We offer training in Manchester Triage, venipuncture, cannulation, and plaster of Paris application. Opportunities for further certification, such as APLS/EPLS, are available.
