Job overview

We are looking for a band 5 Staff Nurse to join our friendly and supportive team in our Endoscopy Department at Royal Hampshire Hospital. This post is a 12 month secondment to cover maternity leave.

The post will involve a rotation within our new pre assessment service which will ensure that our patients are fully assessed prior to their procedures to enable them to understand their procedure , discuss any concerns and ask questions they may have and discuss any medication or dietary change needed.

Training will be given.

Main duties of the job

  • To achieve a level of competence in all aspects of Endoscopy in order to work without direct supervision, enabling safe and appropriate staffing and skill mix. This includes developing a thorough understanding of all endoscopic procedures (including purpose, indications, contra-indications, performance, risks and complications), and provision of highly skilled assistance during endoscopic procedures.
  • To become fully competent in clerking patients on admission to the unit for ALL endoscopic procedures performed, together with obtaining informed written consent, to ensure patients have a full understanding of the procedure(s) and associated risks.
  • To assist in the development of departmental standards and protocols to ensure safe and effective, continuity of care.
  • To become skilled in intravenous cannulation and venesection.
  • To participate in the 24h/7d out of hours on call rota.
  • To develop knowledge and competence in the care, maintenance and storage of all endoscopic equipment to ensure equipment does not get damaged and remains in good working order.
  • To develop knowledge of the construction, function and application of all endoscopes and endoscopic accessories to enable the provision of skilled and experienced assistance/troubleshooting during endoscopic procedures.
  • To obtain detailed knowledge of the decontamination process for endoscopic equipment including the specific infection risks in endoscopy, in order to support the wider endoscopy team.
