Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly enthusiastic Registered Nurse to join the Paediatric Emergency Department. This post is a Fixed Term 9 Month position, working 34.5 hours per week. We are moving into an extended and redeveloped department to ensure children are treated in the best environment possible. Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, develop and implement programmes of care to patients, providing advice in a variety of settings.
  • Carry out nursing procedures in line with current NMC standards of proficiency.
  • Ensure the health, wellbeing and independence of patients and service users across healthcare settings, maintaining associated records, ensuring all patients receive safe and effective care at all times.
  • Supervision of junior staff and all learners.
  • Understand and demonstrate the Trust values at all times.
  • Provide and receive complex information, communicating sensitively and confidentially about patients/clients (for example, care plan discussions with patients).
  • Communicate in a compassionate and empathetic manner, using persuasion and reassurance.
  • Recognise barriers to communication and modify communication style as required.
  • Effectively communicate whilst providing training to students and demonstrate effective communications skills with the wider MDT team.
Clinical Skills
  • Plan and organise a defined caseload of patients on a continuing basis.
  • Assess, plan, implement/deliver and evaluate patient care for a defined caseload and recognise signs of deterioration/change and respond according to protocol.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of training for clinical skills within scope of practice.
  • Maintain safe custody of drugs, ensuring checking, witnessing and administration procedures are compatible with statutory and trust requirements.
  • In the absence of Sister/Charge Nurse, effectively respond to complaints/concerns and escalate as required.
  • Ensure clinical incident/near misses are managed, reported and escalated in a timely manner.
  • Be part of the multidisciplinary team decision making, acting as the patient’s advocate to support their pathway.
  • Work within organisational policy, SOPs and guidelines.
  • Undertake risk assessments and implement risk-reducing measures; report and escalate to the Line Manager any deficiencies in minimizing risk.
  • Ensure privacy, dignity and safety of individuals at all times.
Use of Resources
  • Actively participate in the effective and efficient use of ward/departmental resources and equipment, including stock management and maintenance of equipment.
  • Handle patients’ valuables with safe storage and transportation.
  • Sign off agency timesheets to verify and record hours worked.
  • Liaise with the Rostering Coordinator to balance personal roster within the roster period.
  • Order and receipt goods in accordance with the Trust’s financial framework.
Team Development
  • Deputise in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse.
  • Manage own time and that of others through delegation to ensure high-quality service delivery.
  • Act as assessor/supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Participate in setting yearly personal and professional objectives and support the department’s appraisal process for junior staff.
  • Be flexible in delivering safe staffing across the Trust and participate in redeployment within scope of practice.
Research and Audit
  • Contribute to data collection for research and audit purposes.
  • Identify audit topics relevant to the ward/department.
  • Critically evaluate research before applying to clinical practice to enhance patient care.
Personal Development
  • Identify areas for self-development and training requirements within personal performance planning and development review.
  • Maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary for development and revalidation.
  • Support the rest of the team by recognising and promoting self-help and wellbeing.
  • Develop a culture of learning and innovation and high-quality learning environments.
  • Adopt a reflective approach to practice to continually improve.
