Job overview

Kennaway Ward is an eleven bedded mixed sex elective (planned) admissions ward caring for patients with medical and surgical oncology needs. In addition, there are 3 trolleys where patients are admitted for day case surgical procedures.

Patients admitted to the ward maybe newly diagnosed with cancer or already have a known diagnosis requiring hospital treatments such as chemotherapy, other types of SACT, blood transfusions/infusions, radiotherapy, symptom management or surgical procedures such as breast reconstruction.

This is an exciting time to come and join our inclusive team. We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic individual who is ready to take the next step in their career. You must be passionate about delivering high quality nursing care and be able to demonstrate your experience within an oncology setting. You should possess excellent communication skills and have the ability to work alongside the Multi Disciplinary Teams involved in our patients treatment and care whilst providing support to junior members of the team including students. You will be required to work a mixture of long days and nights across the whole week.

Professional development is our priority. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge and clinical skills with support from the ward sister and our clinical practice facilitator.

Main duties of the job

  • To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
  • To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long term goals or plans.
  • To participate fully in the day to day organization and running of clinical trials including the recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial and liaison as required with trial sponsors.
  • To assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To complete the first level assessment of patients with cancer and their families to gain an understanding of their physiological, psycho-social, spiritual and cultural needs and to develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure that these needs are met. This will include:

  • Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
  • Educating patients on their treatment such as indications and side effects.
  • Ensuring necessary medication and follow up appointments are obtained.

Education/Qualifications

  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment
  • Qualification in oncology or speciality Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent) Recognised teaching qualification

Experience

  • Experience in intravenous drug administration
  • Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
  • Experience in chemotherapy administration
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management

Skills Abilities/knowledge

  • Experience in oncology or area of specialty
  • Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills
  • Computer Literacy (e.g. use of Microsoft Word and Outlook)

Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
