Job description
Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced staff nurse for the Centre for Urgent Care (CUC) and Royal Marsden Hotline (RM Hotline) based at the Chelsea site. We are looking for an outstanding individual to join a team of highly experienced nurses who provide excellent nursing care and strive to make a difference. CUC is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:30 and provides advanced nursing care to patients of the Royal Marsden Hospital who present with acute symptoms related to their disease or treatment. It supports patients on an ambulatory care pathway and provides care for elective patients booked for day-case procedures. The RM Hotline is a 24/7 telephone service which provides patients of the Royal Marsden Hospital with a single point of access for support when they become unwell because of their disease or treatment. This role involves working across both CUC and RM Hotline and requires excellent clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills to appropriately manage patients both in person and via telephone consultations. Please contact Kimberly Fricker on 02073528171 extension 4637 if you would like further information about the post or to arrange an informal visit.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
  • Exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.
  • Participate fully in the day-to-day organization and running of clinical trials, including recruitment, education and monitoring of patients entering a clinical trial and liaison with trial sponsors as required.
  • Assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to a patient in accordance with the NMC code of conduct. There is an expectation for post holders to:
  • Promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff.
  • Participate in Trust initiatives around infection control and care quality indicators.
  • Assist with local or Trust initiatives to ensure continuous improvement of service quality and safeguarding of high standards of care.
  • Be aware of all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure that these are observed.
  • Help foster a supportive working environment and maintain staff morale; provide skilled care and expertise in venepuncture and/or cannulation; assess patients for a suitable central venous access device.
  • Provide education to patients on the care and management of central venous access devices and adopt a problem-solving approach to managing complications with vascular access devices.
  • Be knowledgeable of treatments in progress in the relevant specialty, and adopt a problem-solving approach to symptom management and minimizing adverse reactions. Once suitably trained and depending on the clinical area, administer/check cytotoxic drugs, intravenous antibiotics, novel therapies, trial drugs and supportive therapies, including all necessary blood products.
  • Look after all patients in protective and contact isolation as necessary with strict infection control measures, while educating and giving psychosocial support to patients, their families and more junior staff.
