Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Registered Nurse to work as a Band 5 Staff Nurse within a well established Outpatient Service, based at Bishop Auckland Hospital. This is a general Outpatient Department, serving a variety of medical, surgical, orthopaedic and specialist outpatient clinics. You will have excellent communication skills and an ability to work well as part of a team or independently where required. As the Registered Nurse on duty you will be expected to manage the day to day running of the department in the absence of the departmental sisters, and supervise junior staff and students when required. The role would suit a Registered Nurse with post-registration experience which can be utilised within the clinic setting. A working knowledge of the NHS would be useful.
Main duties of the job
As a band 5 staff Nurse within the Outpatients team you will work alongside a well established team of Registered Nurses and support staff to facilitate the smooth running of clinics within the appointed times. You will be involved in managing clinics.
You will provide advice and support to patients attending clinics to enhance and enable patients to reach optimum health through knowledge, experience and health promotion.
You will act as a mentor to supervise students, newly appointed staff and support staff. To utilise knowledge and have the skills to deliver the best possible evidence based training.
Able to work well under pressure and the confidence to challenge unwanted behaviours. To be able to respond accordingly to patients, relatives or carers who may be distressed following a clinic consultation.
Possess the skills needed e.g. Team Leader Skills to deputise and supervise the nursing team in the absence of the department manager, referring to the department manager when necessary.
You will have a working knowledge of Long Term Health Conditions and of the Trust's Health and safety Policies.

Job responsibilities
To provide nursing assistance and technical support within clinics.
To provide advice to patients within the department enabling optimum treatment, via telephone enquiries and through health promotion information and/or information leaflets.
Teaching new skills to patients to manage self-care.
Dependent upon experience, act as a mentor to students.
Supervision and training of unqualified and newly appointed staff.
Ability to respond appropriately, giving support to distressed patients, relatives and carers during and following consultation.
Supervision of the nursing team, referring to the department manager where appropriate.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Trust Personnel and Health and safety Policies.
