About the Company:

I’ve partnered with an exciting HealthTech start-up on a mission to revolutionise healthcare through technology. Following investment, they are now looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join the team and help build their core backend systems. This is a fantastic opportunity to get in early, take ownership, and shape the future of both the technology and the engineering team.

Role Overview:

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you’ll be one of the first key hires on a new backend team. You will play a critical role in shaping the backend architecture, scaling systems, and setting engineering standards. Whether you want to move into engineering leadership or continue developing your technical expertise with a focus on architecture, the role offers a clear path in both directions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of scalable, high-performance backend systems.
  • Establish and enforce best practices for backend development and system architecture.
  • Provide solutions to complex technical challenges and continuously improve the product and systems.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and apply them to build future-proof, efficient systems.
  • Primary language: Kotlin (experience with Java, Go, or similar multithreaded backend languages is welcome)
  • Cloud Platforms: AWS or GCP
  • CI/CD for continuous integration and deployment

What We’re Looking For:

  • 7+ years of backend engineering experience, with a strong background in multithreaded backend languages (Kotlin, Java, Go, Rust, etc.).
  • Experience working in the HealthTech space
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases.
  • Proficient in system design, API development, and microservices architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), containerisation (Docker), and orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Experience in start-up environments is a plus, as the role will require you to be adaptable and work in a fast-paced, evolving setting.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • A passion for building scalable, secure, and maintainable systems.

Why Join?

  • Competitive £120,000 salary with equity options.
  • Fully remote role (UK-based candidates only).
  • Opportunity to have a real impact on the product and the team from day one.
  • Clear career progression, based on your aspirations.
  • Join a mission-driven company that is transforming healthcare and positively impacting lives.

Interview Process:

The interview process will consist of the following stages:

  • Intro Call: A brief conversation to discuss your background and the role in more detail.
  • Take Home Task or Live Coding (Your Choice): You’ll complete a technical exercise to demonstrate your skills and approach to solving backend challenges.
  • Systems Design Interview: A whiteboarding exercise to assess your ability to design scalable, robust backend systems.
  • Final Interview with Co-Founders: An in-depth conversation to ensure you’re a great fit for the team and the company’s culture.

Please note that if you are NOT a passport holder of the country for the vacancy you might need a work permit. Check our Blog for more information.
