Job description

Job Overview

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT APPLICATIONS FROM STAFF CURRENTLY EMPLOYED BY HYWEL DDA UNIVERSITY HEALTH BOARD.

Develop your Rheumatology career within a supportive and experienced multidisciplinary team at Prince Philip Hospital and Glangwili General Hospital, gaining broad clinical experience across a diverse range of rheumatological conditions while contributing to high-quality patient care.

This post is ideal for doctors who have completed Core Medical Training/Internal Medicine Training and are seeking to build specialist-level experience in Rheumatology, either as preparation for higher specialist training or as part of their ongoing professional development.

Working closely with Consultant Rheumatologists, you will be involved in the assessment and management of patients with inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue diseases, vasculitis and other rheumatological conditions. The role offers exposure to a wide range of rheumatology services, treatment pathways and patient presentations across outpatient, inpatient and day unit settings.

Opportunities include developing and enhancing procedural skills such as joint aspiration and injection, participating in dedicated teaching and educational activities, and contributing to clinical audit, quality improvement, service development and research projects. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training can be arranged where appropriate.

Based in Llanelli and Carmarthen, Prince Philip Hospital and Glangwili General Hospital offer the benefits of working within a close-knit and collaborative team while enjoying the lifestyle advantages of West Wales, including its coastline, countryside and outdoor pursuits. This role provides valuable experience at a level comparable to Higher Specialty Training and is well suited to doctors looking to further their interest in Rheumatology within a welcoming and supportive department.

Main duties of the job

To participate in providing a Rheumatology service to designated hospital and community settings, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness under the supervision of a Consultant Rheumatologist. All clinical staff are accountable for their own clinical competence and must work within the limits of their knowledge, skills and professional guidance, seeking appropriate supervision when required.

The successful applicant will attend three outpatient clinics per week, one with each Consultant Rheumatologist, seeing both new referrals and follow-up patients across a wide range of rheumatological conditions. The post holder will assess patients, formulate management plans and discuss cases with the supervising Consultant.

Patients attend the Rheumatology Day Unit three days per week, and the post holder may be required to provide medical reviews prior to treatment when requested by nursing staff. Ward referrals will be reviewed and discussed with the Consultant providing cover on that day.

The role also includes reviewing and acting upon investigation results, communicating findings and outcomes appropriately, and ensuring clinic correspondence is completed accurately and efficiently with administrative support. Opportunities are available to contribute to ongoing National Audit programmes, clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, service development projects and clinical research activities. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training can be arranged. The post holder will work as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team committed to delivering safe, effective and patient-centred care.
