This Locum Medical Oncologist role sits within a cohesive and supportive multidisciplinary cancer service in Hywel Dda University Health Board, where consultant input is highly valued and integral to service delivery. You will undertake a varied and clinically engaging workload across systemic anti-cancer therapies and outpatient care, supported by an experienced and approachable team of consultants, specialist nurses, and allied health professionals.
Working in Hywel Dda offers a distinctive way of practising medicine. The combination of smaller, well-connected clinical teams and a close-knit population allows for continuity of care, meaningful patient relationships, and visible impact across the patient pathway. Clinicians here often value the ability to focus on quality of care without the pressures typically associated with larger urban centres.
The area itself provides a high standard of living, with easy access to coastline, countryside, and outdoor activities, alongside significantly reduced commute times and a more manageable pace of life. This supports a sustainable balance between clinical responsibilities and personal wellbeing—something increasingly important for consultants at all stages of their careers.
You will deliver Consultant-led outpatient clinics, providing assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing care for patients receiving systemic anti-cancer therapies. This includes developing individualised treatment strategies aligned with national guidance and MDT recommendations, while taking into account patient preference and overall clinical context.
You will play a central role in multidisciplinary team meetings, contributing specialist expertise to guide diagnosis, staging, and treatment decisions. The service benefits from strong collaborative working across oncology, palliative care, radiology, pathology, and surgical teams, enabling well-rounded and timely clinical decision-making.
The role includes responsibility for prescribing and overseeing systemic treatments, managing toxicities, and supporting patients through complex treatment pathways. You will also contribute to the management of acute oncology presentations, ensuring safe and responsive care when patients become unwell.
Working across inpatient and outpatient settings, you will support continuity and consistency of care. There is close day-to-day collaboration with oncology nursing teams, pharmacists, and wider professionals, allowing for a coordinated and patient-centred approach.
