Job summary

Shell Trading and Supply seeks a Senior Sanctions Advisor to deepen expertise in sanctions, export controls, and related areas across Crude Trading, Products Trading, Gas & Energy Marketing & Trading, and Shipping & Supply Operations.

You will lead the global sanctions compliance programme, advise on sanctions risks to senior leadership, and mentor junior team members, joining a diverse, values-led organisation with strong development opportunities.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in legal, compliance, or regulatory roles with hands-on sanctions expertise.
• Advising on sanctions across diverse businesses and levels of seniority.
• Experience briefing senior leadership on high-visibility sanctions issues.
• Holistic analysis of transactions and determining the appropriate action.
• Experience in designing and implementing compliance management frameworks.

Responsibilities

Shell Trading and Supply (T&S) trades natural gas, electrical power, crude oil, refined products, chemicalfeedstocks,and environmental products in energy markets around the world. With industry-leading shipping/maritime capabilities and an integrated global network of supply/distribution activities, Shell T&S is one of the largest global energy trading operations and delivers hundreds of cargos each day to customers within and outside Shell.

Trade control laws,sanctionsand customs regulations financiallyimpacttrading operations and violations can lead to loss of export/import privileges and significant fines for Shell and individual staff as well as imprisonment for individuals. Compliance with trade control legislation is naturally imperative forShellandwe arelooking to appointaSenior Advisor - Sanctionsto deepenourexpertisein this area.

The SeniorSanctions Advisoris a specialist on sanctionsand whereoverlap, export controls, customs and other related areas as neededto supportthe different T&S business activities and lines of business (Crude Trading, Products Trading, Gas & Energy Marketing & Trading, Shipping & Supply Operations), including through the provision of technical advice. The role holder willwork closely with the broader Trade Compliance team andGroup Legal, and otherkey stakeholders outside of T&S.

What you’ll be doing

TheSenior Sanctions Advisorwill be working globally within theTrade Compliance Team to:

• Lead the globalT&Ssanctionscomplianceprogramme–this includesownership of the sanctions policy, procedure, and any associated standardsand controls.Serve as a custodian/focal point for any questions or needed changes.
• SupportBusiness Leadership decision-making in theHigh RiskCommittee – responsible for reviewing cases before they reach senior leadership anddirectlyadvisingsenior leadershiponsanctionsrisks.
• Provideoperationalsanctionsadvice and instructions,both directlytothe business, through Compliance Advisors, and to the Compliance Operations team.
• Update and providesanctionstraining to theT&S business and the Compliance Advisoryteamsas needed.
• Lead the upskilling and development of more junior members of the Compliance organization providingsanctionssupport.
• Independentlyidentifyoperational, regulatory, compliance, and/or technicalsanctionsrisks and assess them using recognized Shell methodologies.
• Recommend and implementsanctions-relatedmitigation measures, process improvements, and governance adjustments.
• Keep appraised of,and communicate out,changes inglobal sanctionsregulatory requirements; ensure updates arecommunicated in auser-friendlyandtimelymanner to thebusinessand business leadership.
• Maintain a robust working knowledge of the T&S business to enable integration of mandatorysanctionsprocedures into business processes to manage and mitigate identifiedsanctionsrisks.
• Promote awareness ofsanctionsrisks andrequiredprocesses throughout theorganization.

What you bring

We are keen to hear from candidate with extensive experience in legal, compliance, or regulatory roles, with a strong preference for deep, hands-on expertise in economic and trade sanctions. Other core experience sought:

• A strongtrack recordofadvising on sanctionsor other related regulatory areasacross different businesses and lines ofdefence, and levels of seniority.
• Experience briefing senior leadership onhigh-visibility sanctions issues and changes; ability to answerquestionsreal time and clearly articulate risks and mitigations.
• Experience of undertaking holistic analysis of transactionsand determiningappropriate courseof action.
• Experienceanalysingand interpreting regulatory changes in the sanctions, exportcontrolsand customsdomains, assessing the impact on thebusinessandidentifyingwhere changes to operating procedures arerequired.
• Experience in designingandimplementingcompliance managementframeworks andsystemspreferred.
• Experience of drafting the full suite of policy documents in the sanctionsspace.
• Astrongtrack recordofstakeholder engagement.Experience of liaising with government agencies and inquiries/investigations related to any areas of trade controlsstronglypreferred.
