JOB SUMMARY
-Position reports directly to the Clear Lake Technical Manager and provides technical assistance for plant operations. Position requires direct interaction with other departmental managers, staff positions, and the R&D organization to exchange information and ideas directly related to the success of the plant and the Acrylics business unit.
-Position has no direct reports nor a designated backup in the organization.
-Position helps the technical manager support the development of the engineers within the technical organization.
Job Dimensions
-Production Data:
Understand and optimize site systems such as reaction, distillation, incinerations, flares, utilities, tank farms, cooling towers, etc., to improve health, safety, & environmental compliance, minimize operating costs, improve quality, and maximize raw material efficiencies. Lead other high-priority Variable Cost, Repetitive Production Expense or Operational Asset Utilization improvements projects across the site.
-People Data:
Responsible for training Operations personnel and other staff in technical issues and new projects. Mentors developing engineers and/or staff engineers. Completed Greenbelt Project Leader certification.
-Financial Data:
Responsible for the financial evaluation of potential projects to improve raw material yields or reduce utility usage for the Clear Lake Plant.
-Process Data:
Responsible for interpreting process information.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
-Environmental (10%):
Support full environmental compliance and optimal environmental performance. Review permit compliance data and new permit applications to ensure consistency with best engineering practices. Provide REED data from the units to the Senior Environmental Specialist to ensure accurate and appropriate entry into the REED database.
-Process Safety Goal (20%):
Support full compliance with all Safety & Health regulatory requirements including OSHA, PSM, and Company Policies and standards. Lead incident investigations, ensure timely responses, develop and implement action items. Key member of PHA team for units in their area. Follow MOC and Procedure Use policies. Coach others as needed. Lead by example and meet CLO Leadership Expectations.
-Operation and Technical Goal (50%):
Maximize operational efficiency and product quality by identifying and proposing improvements. Support plant initiatives for new product development, process technology projects, and debottlenecking. Assist during plant turnarounds, emergency operations, and technical support. Drive OAU goal, 85+% in turnaround years and 89+% otherwise, through disciplined reliability programs.
-Professional Development Goal (5%):
Develop skills to support the plant through professional growth in technical, interpersonal, management, and community relations areas. Set specific goals aligned with plant objectives.
-Major Capital Projects (15%):
Assist with major projects (>$2MM), provide mass & utility balances, and work on reactor modifications for recycle gas technology.
The position reports to the Technical Manager, with dotted line to the Operations Manager, supporting both operational and improvement objectives. Must develop a strong knowledge of the plant's technical aspects and business context, communicate effectively across organizational levels, and manage multiple tasks.
Requirements include supporting HES policies, participating in safety activities, understanding permit and safety requirements, and physical ability to access plant areas, including confined spaces. Minimal overseas travel may be required.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, with at least 12 years of related experience, or advanced degrees with fewer years. Greenbelt certification is preferred.
Competencies include expertise in process chemistry, chemical technology, safety, digital tools, and leadership. Ability to develop complex solutions, lead initiatives, and mentor others.
Physical demands involve working in a chemical manufacturing environment.
