Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled SQL Server Engineer to lead the audit, analysis, and optimization of complex database systems. Our current SQL Server environment has accumulated significant technical debt—millions of stored procedures, inefficient joins, frequent query locks, and performance bottlenecks. This role is perfect for someone who thrives on solving tough database challenges, understands the intricacies of SQL Server internals, and can work cross-functionally to improve performance, structure, and maintainability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Database Analysis & Audit: Analyze existing schema, stored procedures, indexes, and relationships to identify performance bottlenecks, frequent locking/blocking issues, and inefficient query patterns.
  • Query Optimization & Mentoring: Refactor poorly written SQL queries and stored procedures. Educate developers on writing performant SQL and best practices.
  • Database Clean-Up & Refactoring: Rationalize and refactor redundant or obsolete stored procedures and tables. Simplify overly complex joins and table relationships.
  • Performance Tuning: Implement and monitor indexing strategies, query plans, and partitioning. Utilize tools like SQL Profiler, Extended Events, and DMVs for diagnostics.
  • Governance: Define and implement database standards and governance procedures, contributing to documentation and change management protocols.
The Ideal Candidate
  • Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience with SQL Server (2016+).
  • Technical Depth: Deep knowledge of T-SQL, indexing strategies, and execution plans. Proven experience in troubleshooting locks, deadlocks, and query bottlenecks.
  • Legacy Systems: Experience in reverse engineering large-scale, legacy stored procedure logic.
  • Sector Knowledge: Financial Services (Investment Banking, Asset Management) or Energy sector experience is highly desirable.
  • Soft Skills: Ability to communicate complex technical findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with data modeling and schema redesign.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., Redgate, SolarWinds, SQL Sentry).
  • Understanding of CI/CD for databases and experience in Agile/DevOps environments.
Why Apply?
  • Meaningful Impact: Optimize critical financial systems handling billions in transactions.
  • Complex Challenge: Tackle 50TB+ databases, millions of stored procedures, and performance bottlenecks – not routine maintenance.
  • Senior Team: Work alongside engineers from top investment banks and asset managers.
  • Stable, Long-Term: Permanent role with a top-tier financial institution – real job security.
  • Hybrid Flexibility: 2-3 days in the office at our London location, rest remote.

Right-to-work status: No visa sponsorship available. (UK work authorisation only)
