Job description

Overview

Opus 2’s position as a leading provider of transcription services in the UK and globally provides a platform to use our knowledge of transcription and harness technology-enhanced methods to ensure the efficient production of high-quality transcripts through traditional transcription and using voice recognition.

With demand continuing to grow for our transcription services, we are seeking an enthusiastic Speech-to-Text Editor to join our Speech-to-Text team.

The successful candidate will work on transcripts of court hearings, public inquiries, arbitrations and tribunals, as well as meetings, interviews and telephone calls.

They will have a meticulous eye for detail, be deadline focused and highly organised. A background in editing and/or proofreading would be highly beneficial. A love of language and learning and a willingness to become immersed in different areas of the law and of legal transcription are essential.

The role is fully remote, giving you the opportunity to be involved in some of the highest profile cases globally from the comfort of your own home.

Job Overview

Working as part of the Speech-to-Text team, you will be responsible for ensuring that transcripts are produced to the requisite standard by following existing quality control guidelines and seeking continuous improvement in your editing skills.

In your first few months, you will be immersing yourself in the world of court reporting and will have the opportunity to attend virtual hearings to familiarise yourself with the flow of a hearing and with the legal jargon used by counsel and judges alike. You will receive comprehensive training and support in transcript production, enabling you to become an expert in the field. You will also receive training in editing via the Opus 2 Speech-to-Text Editing Suite and have the opportunity to contribute to its future development.

What you’ll be doing
Hearing Preparation
  • Virtually attend live court and arbitration hearings to build familiarity with legal terminology and court procedures.
  • Support hearing operations by starting recordings, monitoring audio quality, and liaising with relevant teams to resolve any audio or technical issues.
  • Review client documentation and prepare custom glossaries for new hearings as part of standard hearing preparation.
Editing & Transcript Production
  • Edit live or post-hearing Speech-to-Text output, developing accuracy, speed, and knowledge of legal terminology.
  • Work alongside experienced editors on shorter hearing segments to gain experience producing same-day transcripts. Communicate and collaborate with colleagues using Slack and other internal tools to maintain consistency across transcripts.
  • Continuously improve transcript readability, consistency, and turnaround times.
Training & Development
  • Complete comprehensive training covering both editorial and technical aspects of the role through structured feedback, documentation, and virtual or in person training sessions.
  • Develop the stamina, accuracy, and quick decision-making skills needed to handle increasingly complex and demanding editing work.
Progression & Greater Responsibility
  • Take increasing ownership of hearing preparation, glossary creation, and hearing management for your team.
  • Identify and address inconsistencies across transcript production while coordinating with team members.
  • Progress to working within smaller editorial teams, contributing to all stages of transcript production, including real-time editing, editing transcript feeds, team leadership responsibilities, and finalising transcripts for client distribution.
  • Maintain delivery of high-quality transcripts accurately and efficiently under tight deadlines.
