Job Overview
The Speech & Language Therapy team at UHD are looking for a B6 therapist to join our integrated stroke therapy team. Following recent investment in training, we have a number of opportunities in the team. This will include actively working towards obtaining video fluoroscopy competencies with the possibility of FEES competencies at a later date.


This role requires HCPC Registration
Base Location: Royal Bournemouth Hospital

We are a friendly, sociable and supportive team with a focus on service improvement and team development. Our Stroke team are currently involved in the international PhEAST study, providing opportunities to be involved in research and to deliver pharyngeal electrical stimulation to dysphagic patients. You will be invited to actively participate in service improvement projects to improve the quality of care for our stroke patients. There will also be the opportunity to supervise newly qualified members of the team.


We offer a 7-day service to our patients so weekend and bank holiday working will be required. As part of University Hospitals Dorset, this post will involve primarily working at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital site, however, there is an expectation that there may be occasional cross site working. Part-time and flexible working options will be considered.

Essential criteria

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent
  • Dysphagia Competency
  • HCPC registration
  • Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists

Desirable criteria

  • Videofluoroscopy competencies RCSLT level 3
  • To be competent in the assessment and management of patients with tracheostomy

Experience
Essential criteria

  • Working with a range of conditions including respiratory, neurological conditions, acquired disorders, long-term conditions and care of the elderly in an acute setting
  • Independent assessment, management, therapeutic intervention and discharge of patients with communication disorders and dysphagia

Desirable criteria

  • Supervision of students and junior staff
  • Working in a Critical Care environment

Technical Skills
Essential criteria

  • Skills to assess, manage & treat conditions and patients with complex multi pathologies at specialist level
  • Skills in assessment and support of alternative and augmentative communication aids
  • Skills to independently prioritise clinical and nonclinical workload

Knowledge
Essential criteria

  • Sound understanding of evidence based practice for the treatment of aphasia, dysarthria, dyspraxia and dysphagia post stroke

  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and its relevance to clinical situations
  • Understanding of National Service Frameworks, NICE guidance and National strategy documents.
  • Ability to critique evidence base and apply to clinical practice
