BACKGROUND TO THE POST

The Speech & Language Therapist is the bridge between a student’s internal world and their external environment. Without specialist communication support, students with ASD or learning disabilities face a significant risk of social exclusion and challenging behaviour stemming from frustration.

The main purpose of the post is to support the delivery and development of high-quality therapy provision for young people with learning disabilities and differences, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and other complex needs, while guiding and mentoring other therapists across WCG. Students at this stage are navigating a dual path: mastering vocational skills while simultaneously developing the self-regulation and social communication required for community inclusion. The SLT within this setting works at the heart of a multidisciplinary team (MDT), collaborating with tutors, job coaches, social workers, parents, and support mentors.

The post holder will report to the Head of School for Supported Learning, Engagement and Schools.

MAIN TASKS

  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and clinical leadership to a team of Speech and Language Therapists and practitioners across multiple schools and homes.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and develop evidence-based therapy plans for communication, eating, drinking and swallowing needs.
  • Work closely with education, residential and clinical colleagues as well as external stakeholders and families to deliver joinedup, person-centred care.
  • Drive innovation and best practice across our SLT provision, contributing to policy, training, and service improvement.
  • Track progress, evaluate outcomes, and adjust interventions to ensure measurable impact.
  • Deliver internal training on communication strategies, AAC, and supporting individuals with complex needs.
  • Provide input on dysphagia management and advise on AAC tools to promote inclusive communication.

In order to support during busy exam periods, you may be asked to undertake exam invigilator duties. The College will provide training.

The list of duties is not exhaustive but outlines the main features of the post at appointment and may vary as the job evolves without affecting the nature of the duties or the responsibility level.
