We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to join our well-established Speech and Language Therapy team. We are a supportive, nurturing and innovative team who are excited to welcome new members to join us. We work as part of a Multidisciplinary Community Learning Disability Team consisting of Community Nurses, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Support Workers and Psychiatrists.

Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust Learning Disability Services are undergoing an exciting development opportunity for a B6 Speech and Language Therapy to join the well-established team. Applicants will be versatile and innovative with experience or enthusiasm to work in speech and language therapy in a community learning disability setting. We welcome applications from current band 5 Speech and Language Therapists who wish to gain experience in a band 6 role.

Main duties of the job

Our service offers assessment and intervention to adults with learning disabilities in Leeds who have a communication or swallowing difficulty whose needs cannot be met within a mainstream service. You will join a network of Speech and Language Therapists who will support you to develop your clinical skills in dysphagia, communication, service improvements and working in a person-centred way. They meet monthly for group clinical supervision, to share good practice and initiate service improvements.

There are also opportunities to develop your leadership skills and take an active role in service development including training, outcome measures and research.

You will be a valued member of our highly supportive multi-disciplinary, community learning disability service and AHP community. You will manage an identified caseload of clients with a range of clinical needs.

You will be supported to develop your skills through MDT meetings, the speech and language practice development meetings and the AHP forum.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills with an ability to form wide networks with both health and social care teams. You will be able to deliver compassionate, patient focused care with a strong reference to the clinical evidence base. The successful candidate will be eager to develop their knowledge in specific clinical areas to improve practice and to strengthen the team’s response to need.

It would be essential for the applicant to have completed post graduate competencies in dysphagia.

Excellent professional links exist with Speech and Language Therapy colleagues within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, and Leeds Community Healthcare which ensures a wealth of opportunities for clinical and professional development. Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust has a strong commitment in continuing professional development, structured through clinical supervision, appraisal, and personal development planning.

You will carry out Speech and Language Therapy assessments and deliver communication and dysphagia interventions personalized to meet the needs of adults who are referred to the team along with the following;
• To work as a member of a multi-disciplinary Community Learning Disability Team (CLDT), offering a comprehensive service to service users who require specialist health interventions.
• To participate in the ongoing development and maintenance of quality services, ensuring ongoing commitment to the care programme approach, managing complex care, and acting as a Care Co-ordinator where appropriate.
• To support and guide junior staff members and participate in the education and supervision of a range of students.
• To maintain clear links with your Speech and Language Therapy structures and your AHP lead within the Trust.
• Support the Speech and Language Therapy development and modernisation and the adherence to your Speech and Language Therapy standards and codes of practice.
• To utilise your core Speech and Language Therapy skills to provide high quality Speech and Language Therapy interventions to people with a learning disability.

If you are a Speech and Language Therapist who is interested in supporting people using a holistic care model and social model of care, in working closely within an MDT and liaising with multi agency services, in advocating for the physical health needs of this vulnerable client group, in being creative in developing bespoke programmes, in delivering informal and formal training to care providers this could be the post for you!

The service runs Monday to Friday 9 to 5. All team members have access to full remote technology (phones and laptops) to support smart ways of working. LD services are adaptive in safely and effectively meeting the needs of our service users and their carers.
