Overview
Applications are invited for the post of Endocrine Surgery Senior Clinical Fellow. The successful candidate will work in the Breast & Endocrine Surgery Unit with the Endocrine Surgery team. The Endocrine surgery team offers the full range of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery, including benign and malignant pathologies, open, minimally invasive and Robotic surgeries. The unit provides a city-wide endocrine surgery consultant on-call service and sees subspecialist tertiary referrals (e.g., post-renal transplant hyperparathyroidism, phaeochromocytoma, Adrenocortical Carcinoma and paediatric thyroid surgery). The team collaborates with the breast surgery team and other departments such as psychology, medical endocrinology, nuclear medicine and clinical chemistry, with links to the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology.
There are three hospital sites within the Liverpool city area (Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree University Hospital and Broadgreen Hospital) linked for endocrine surgery services.
Responsibilities
- Attend regular operating lists, outpatient clinics, audits, academic meetings and case conferences. Some operating lists may be on a Saturday and some clinics in the evening hours (17:00–20:30).
- Take part in daily ward rounds with other resident surgical staff on duty; support pre-operative nursing teams with clinical decision making and specialist referrals to aid peri-operative assessment.
- Carry out pre- and post-operative care as necessary and contribute to day-to-day care of the unit's patients with other junior staff.
- Participate in prospective audits and be responsible for collating and presenting departmental audit data at regular in-house and regional meetings.
- Contribute to diagnosis and treatment of endocrine surgical conditions; receive supervision from consultant surgeons and physicians attached to the unit.
- Receive training in surgery on the thyroid, parathyroids and adrenal glands, and engage in teaching of medical students, foundation/training doctors and MDT members.
Teaching and Research
- As a teaching hospital, opportunities exist to participate in audit and clinical research. Medical students are attached to the unit, and the post-holder is expected to provide clinical teaching to undergraduates and contribute to nurse training and mentorship.
- Engagement in teaching/training programmes and attendance at relevant courses is encouraged; involvement in research and quality improvement projects is desirable.
Qualifications
- Essential: MBChB/MBBS or equivalent; MRCS; Fully GMC Registered with a Licence to Practice.
- Desirable: Additional degree (e.g., MSc, MD, PhD); FRCS; postgraduate general surgery experience including a minimum of 12 months in Endocrine Surgery; hold a CCT (or equivalent) in General & Endocrine Surgery; NHS experience.
- Clinical skills: sound clinical knowledge, strong decision-making, ability to prioritise clinical need, manage acutely ill surgical patients, and maximise safety and minimise risk.
- Desirable: ability to investigate common endocrine surgical presentations and present management plans to supervising consultants/ MDT; commitment to evidence-based practice, audits and quality improvement; teaching engagement; peer-reviewed publications or presentations; formal educational role or qualification.
