Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and patient focused Specialty Doctor in Stroke Medicine to work within our team at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals.

Stroke Medicine is an expanding team of 5 consultants. We run a high quality regional Hyper-acute Stroke service, with daily HASU ward rounds; a local TIA service; and acute and rehab stroke services across 3 sites.

Main duties of the job

  • maintain the highest clinical standards in Stroke services with a commitment to HASU, ASU and TIA clinics
  • Attend and participate in weekly Stroke MDT meetings.
  • Examination, investigation and treatment of patients attending the Department.
  • Supervise other staff including junior doctors and specialist nurses.
  • Participation in the internal education activities of the Department including teaching nurses, medical students, junior doctors and other visitors to the Department.
  • Participation in the external educational activities, including meetings and courses hosted by the Department.
  • Participation in the research, audit and clinical governance activities of the Department.
  • Providing medical support to non-medical staff of the clinic.
  • Performance of administrative tasks relevant to Stroke (such as writing of letters to colleagues and patients, compiling data, development of clinic protocols).
  • Clinical liaison with other hospital departments, general practitioners and other agencies as required.
  • The post holder must work flexibly with colleagues to achieve the hospital agreed planned activity for inpatient and outpatient services

Person specification

Audit and Research

  • Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects and the implementation of outcomes
  • Critical Appraisal Skills
  • Evidence of knowledge of research methodology

Qualifications

  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Must have or be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council at time of appointment and continue to hold a License to Practise.
  • MBchB/MBBS or equivalent
  • Completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, or equivalent experience and competencies

Experience and Achievements

  • Must be able to demonstrate clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Stroke Medicine
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the role
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions
  • Attendance at a recognised management course

Teaching and Training

  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision
  • Attendance at a teaching course
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education

  • Ability to use IT Systems – including Word, Excel, PowerPoint Outlook
