The unit also has a programme of ABO incompatible transplantation and has a large donation after cardiac death transplant programme, including marginal kidney transplants and dual transplants.

The department also provides a large and complex vascular access service to MFT and also Salford Hospitals, with about 500 cases done annually. It also provided a peritoneal dialysis service, including laparoscopic catheter insertion.

In addition, the unit is one of 2 National Commissioning Group funded centres for surgery for Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis. Patients are referred to this service from around the country and also internationally.

Two members of the team provide an Endocrine Surgery Service carrying out over 100 endocrine surgical procedures including laparoscopic adrenalectomy. The department is also a regional referral centre for Abdominal Wall Reconstruction.

On average Manchester Abdominal NORS team attends around 5 donor hospitals every week and alternates with Leeds on a week on / week off (Monday-Monday) on call basis for both Adult and Paediatric retrievals but excluding Neonatal retrievals. The service is a consultant led service, comprising two retrieval surgeons, a scrub nurse and a perfusionist. Retrieval transport is provided by a specialist ambulance team with flights to distances which require over 3 hours of road travel. This post is intended to provide senior cover for the Manchester Abdominal National Organ Retrieval Service. The appointed individuals appointed will provide senior leadership to the retrieval team when on call in a 1:4 basis. They will be responsible for safe and high quality organ retrieval according to national standards. They will be responsible for the training of junior surgeons and new staff members.
