Job description

Applications are invited to apply for a Fixed-term Specialty Doctor role from 01.09.2025 until 01.05.2026 with a special interest in Oncology at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

This post offers an 11 PA programmed activities with the Oncology service. Additional programmed activities may be available but are subject to annual discussion and agreement and do not form part of the contractual agreement.

The post holder will work closely with all Oncology Consultants, providing clinic and ward support to ensure continuity of care for Oncology patients within Milton Keynes Hospital Foundation Trust. The role involves developing and enhancing oncology care; medical oncology experience is essential, and radiotherapy experience is desirable.

The post holder will deliver high standards of clinical care both directly and indirectly through support and education of the wider workforce.

Our modern Cancer Centre includes a chemotherapy suite, outpatient consulting rooms, treatment areas, an oncology and haematology ward, and a Wellbeing Service. The service is supported by a forward-thinking management team, Nurse Practitioners, Palliative Care Team, and Macmillan Information and Support Centre. We believe in holistic care, offering complementary therapy, clinical psychology, and Citizen Advice Bureau clinics. We also support careers and patient groups.

Principal Responsibilities
Clinical Work
  • Daily medical assessments for pre/post chemotherapy patients throughout treatment
  • Prescribing and supporting nurse-led services
  • Review of Acute Oncology inpatients following emergency admissions
  • Provide medical cover for adverse reactions and clinical risks within the chemotherapy unit
  • Support Oncology unit with complications and neutropenia assessments
  • Attend specialist MDTs
  • Provide oncology support and visibility across the trust
  • Disseminate knowledge to junior colleagues
  • Integrate within all site-specific cancers
  • Undertake outpatient clinics as required
  • Review chemotherapy patient laboratory results, liaise with pharmacy, prescribe therapies
  • Review and assess post-radiotherapy patients
  • Participate in the on-call rota
Managerial
  • Review current services and development needs
  • Establish contacts/outreach advice/support (GPs etc.)
  • Support complex treatments in chemotherapy suite
  • Coordinate regimens' repatriation
  • Attend network site-specific groups as appropriate
  • Support nursing/AHP teams
  • Participate in audits and mortality meetings
  • Engage in research and development
  • Support and supervise medical students in oncology
  • Maintain CPD and GMC revalidation requirements
  • Work with Cancer Services team on national chemotherapy agenda (Peer Review, NCAG, etc.)
